PRESENTATION ON Safed musli Chlorophytum borivilianum

INTRODUCTION: Scientific name: Chlorophytum borivilianum Common name: Safed Musli Family: Liliaceae DISTRIBUTION Safed musli is naturally grown in the hilly areas. Foot Hills of Uttaranchal, Himachal Pradesh & Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, TamilNadu , Kerala, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra

DESCRIPTION It is a medicinal plant, with small, usually white flowers, produced on sparse panicles up to 120 cm long . It can grow up to a maximum height of 1.5 ft; Tubers can grow up to a depth of 10 inches. Around sixteen different varieties have been identified to be found in the Indian Sub Continent .

Leaves: Sessile or short petiolate , With sheathing bases, 15 to 45 cms . 1.5 to 2.5cms . Liner or linear lanceolate,membranous , glabrous or sparsely softly hairy . The leaf tip in contact with soil produces adventitious roots. Flowers: white Fruit : The seeds are black in colour and with angular edges. Capsule, 4- seeded with a slender beak and spongy septa, seeds oblong, black and shiny, Root stock shout, short or elongate, cylindrical, 4 to 15 cm long , average being 7.4 cm. 0.5-1. cm PLANTS OF SAFED MUSLI FLOWERS OF SAFED MUSLI ROOTS OF SAFED MUSLI

CULTIVATION Well drained soils with rich mineral content is ideal for this crop. Hard and acidic soils are to be avoided . Fingers or tubers are commonly used as planting material Seeds can also be used for planting, but for good results fingers are preferred. Tissue culture plantlets can also be used for planting Planting of fingers is done in beds or ridges depending on the slope and drainage of the soil. Generally fingers are planted at a distance of 35 to 40 cm. About 80,000 fingers weighing 10-12 q are required for planting in one hectare.

USES The roots of safed musli is reported to contain 2-15% saponin , which has the medicinal property of enhancing vitality and immunity to human beings . It also helps in correcting gynaecological disorders. Dried tubers are used as a curative for pre-natal and post-natal illness, arthritis, restorative and a health tonic etc . Because of its medicinal property, safed musli is known as divya aushadhi and ayurvedic anori .
