Suppose you ride a bus from Manila to Quezon. What do you think will happen to the bus if it passes along a curvy road? The bus will slow down. The bus will speed up or move faster. The velocity of the bus will not change.
After passing a curvy road, the bus travels in a straight road. How will you describe the velocity of the bus? The velocity increases The velocity decreases The velocity does not change at all
There were only 25 passengers in the bus. Along the way, 5 passengers drop at Manila bus stop, and another 4 passengers dropped-off at San Pablo bus stop. What can you say about the mass of the object? The mass of the object increases The mass of the object decreases The mass of the object does not change at all
IMPULSE Impulse is the change in momentum of an object when a force is applied to it over a period of time . Impulse is the force applied to an object multiplied by the time the force is acting.
Example: When you kick a ball when you throw a ball when you hits a ball
Equation form: I= F x t where: UNIT: I is Impulse N.s F is force N t is time s
What do you think is the impulse of an object moving with constant momentum? The impulse is zero . Why? it does not change the momentum of an object.
The impulse applied to an object will be equal to the change in momentum. Mathematically expressed as: I = Δ p F Δ t = m Δ v Unit: N.s = kg.m /s IMPULSE-MOMENTUM THEOREM
Newton’s Second Law of Motion Net force is directly proportional to the mass of a body and its acceleration. F = ma F = m.( vf -vi)/t Ft = m( vf -vi) Ft = mvf – mvi Since p= mv, then Ft = pf – pi or Ft = Δ p
SAMPLE PROBLEMS Tiger Woods hits a 0.02 kg golf ball, giving it a speed of 25 m/s. What impulse does he impart to the ball? Given: m= 0.02 kg vf = 25 m/s vi = 0 unknown = I?
Sample the problems A cart is pushed with a force of 25 N in a 4 seconds which caused it to move. What is the impulse imparted on the car? An offensive player passes a football of mass 0.42 kg with a velocity of 25.0 m/s due south. If the player is in contact with the ball for 0.05 s, what is the magnitude of the average force he exerts?
Sample problem A 0.1 kg hockey puck is sliding at 15 m/s on the ice. A player hits the puck with a stick, changing its velocity to 30 m/s in 0.2 seconds. What is the impulse applied to the puck?
Solve the problems 1. A 1.2 kg car is traveling at 10 m/s. It collides with a wall and comes to a stop in 1 second. What is the impulse experienced by the car? 2. A 0.03 kg baseball is thrown with a speed of 30 m/s. It is caught by a player in 0.1 seconds. What is the impulse exerted by the player’s hands on the ball?
Solve the problems A 0.3 kg baseball moving at 40 m/s is caught by a player in 0.3 seconds. Calculate the impulse and the average force exerted by the player's hands on the ball.
