DEFINITION A continued programme of education provided by the employer, with the intention of enriching its employees with skills or knowledge that are relevant to the positions they currently hold, or which they will be appointed in future, is known as in-service education. 3

FEATURES OF IN-SERVICE EDUCATION In-service Education is provided in a job setting. In-service Education planned in way that it is specific to service and is on going. Is preplanned program which is well organized by the employees. It enables the person to perform effectively in the organization. In-service Education helps the employee to develop professional competence, knowledge and understanding of the role which they have to perform.
FACTORS AFECTING IN-SERVICE EDUCATION Professional standards: Standard are the guidelines against which the performance is measured during evaluation. In-service education should be planned in such a way that is aims at uplifting the professional standards. Cost of services: In-service education program may increase the efficiency of the staff and helps cuts off the cost of service and increase their quality. Manpower: Human resources are essential in planning in-service education for organizing implementing & bringing about change in the organization. Professional Trends: These are the changes talking place in a particular profession on the basis of changing demands of the community & growing technology.
Aims and objectives of In-Service Education The objective of in-service education is to improve nursing care through upgrading the knowledge of the staff. The important reason for in-service education is to bring continuous improvement in the whole staff of the organization. 7 Aims of in-service education
OBJECTIVES The primary objective of in-service education is the improvement of professional practices and development of the person as an individual & responsible citizen. It promotes enthusiasm in the learning process & encourages the search for the latest knowledge. Skillls development It improves health care delivery to the public, thus enhancing the quality of effective nursing practice. It develop interest and job satisfaction. It develops confidence through the acquisition of up-to date knowledge.
It is designed to retrain people to improve their performance and communicative ability & to start on a course of continuous learning.
It discover potentialities
It reduces turnover and absenteeism.
It helps to observe and bring about changes in staff behaviour.
It helps to maintain high standards in nursing.
It improves a staff member’s chances for promotion. It promotes cost consciousness of nursing services in relation to all other programmes.
10 NEED FOR IN SERVICE PROGRAMME The need for in-service education for professional nurse is influenced by research and advanced in health care. The most effective programmes gives emphasis to the outcome rather than to staff development. If a result is considered valuable, the individual participation will be active. Needs for development of manual , behavioural & communication skills essential for exceution of their jobs Need for development of decision making & managerial skills Need for development of leadership skills Need for development of analytical & innovative thinking for investigating potentialities & efficiency their job
Maintenance of familiarity with new knowledge and subject matter: One of the features of a profession is that its members regularly update themselves of the relevant knowledge. Increased skill in providing service: For individual differences among pupils. Improved attitude and skills: Educational literature frequently re-emphasizes the idea that curriculum improvement is primarily a consequence of the improvement of people. An important skill needed by all educators is that of cooperative group work. Greater skill in utilizing community resources & in working with adults: An important task of modern education is the development of intelligent civic loyalties and understanding. Development and refinement of common values and goals: One of the major purpose of in-service education is the development of common values and goals in the staff of an institution & group so that they must work cooperatively over a period of time.
COMPONENTS OF IN-SERVICE EDUCATION Orientation: It is the process in which a new employee is familiarized with a particular work setting & duties by providing basic information about the employer This helps the new employee to better adjust in new environment and also helps interpersonal acceptance. Orientation is given in the following areas: Introduction about the administrators, supervisors, and co-workers. Introduction about the job description, rewards, discipline & HR policies including salary , leave , promotion.
Focus on 3 Areas General orientation – Physical setup of organisation , philosophy , purpose & role of employees Hospital orientation – services available for staff & pt in hospital , Resources available & library facilities Orientation to nursing department – organization of nursing department , different categories of nursing personnel , special programmes & activities

Skills Training : Provides employees with skills & attitude required for the job & keeps them abreast of changing methods & new techniques Enable to meet qualitative & quantitative standards TYPES OF TRAINING :- Basic literacy training Technical training Interpersonal skills Training Problem solving training Diversity training TRAINING METHODS : - Job rotation – By assigning people to different tasks on a temporary basis Mentoring programme – A new employee frequently learn under the guidance of an experienced workers
Leadership in management development: It is essential for a nurse to develop her qualities as a leader and a manager to meet the skill in various functions such as conducting conference/workshops, writing/supervising nursing care plan, writing various plans etc. In this program, the nurse are given learning experience which are necessary to provide & upgrade the skills & knowledge required in the current & future positions. Also helps in guiding new employee in outpatient care

Continuing Education: Nursing profession these days is growing very fast in terms of knowedge , skills and change in attitude, as a result of which the demand of continuing education in this profession has become a priority. Therefore this profession requires continuous development of standards in practice, education and research. Helps employee keep abreast of new concept & increase knowledge, understanding & competency 5. Staff Development Programmes: to meet the educational needs of nursing of students there must be provision for regular staff development programmes. The components of staff development are orientation, in-service education, continuing education including self instruction, short-term courses, workshops, seminars and presentation of scientific papers.

DECENTRALISED APPROACH DISADVANTAGES: Lack of leadership Conflicts ,insufficiency Small or no budget Duplication of efforts ADVANTAGES:- Planned for those who work together & share common goals More self direction , initiative & participation Classess related to clinical problems. Based on the conviction that IN-SERVICE EDUCATION curriculum for all nursing personnel should be the responsibility of practising nurse with whom the personnel work Employees expected to keep the administration informed of their activities & consult when needed but expected to develop & direct their own learning experiences

INTRODUCTION Adult education/ learning is a formal & informal system of education for older & mature persons . It is carried out on a part- time basis & is entirely voluntary Involves a conscious effort towards developing the individual capabilities of adults by public / private agencies through informational , cultural , remedial , vocational, recreational , professional & other means The idea is to provide learning opportunities to all age groups at any place & through recreational activities not merely by a formal institutional learning
IMPORTANCE Lifelong learning :- Adult leaning can be continued from any life stage to gain learning experiences Professional development :- Adult education can be formulated into various field of specialization such as vocational education , personal enrichment , remedial training in literacy & other professionals skills Skills & Technology development :- Increased importance partly because of industrialization which require more skilled workers & technology to continue to update their skills & knowledge and partly due to increasing consciousness among all the people to grab an opportunity & realize their true potential
