ORAL COMMUNICATION SIR JM GORDULA

FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNICATION

The Age of Communication has an unavoidable impact on you .

Without communication, societies could not organize into groups, mark the passage of individuals, debate, make decisions, and change ourselves in necessary ways.

Communication performs five (5) important functions to a society. To Motivate Into Action To Give Information To Persuade or Convince To Entertain To Express FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNICATION

As far as functions of communication are concerned, all instances involve wanting our listeners to do something; that is, in all instances the main function of communication is to motivate into action. TO MOTIVATE INTO ACTION

We are curious beings. We are interested in history, current events, trending products, new discoveries, and among other things. Another function of communication is imparting new knowledge or giving information to our listeners. TO GIVE INFORMATION

Another function of communication is to persuade our listeners – to influence their attitudes, beliefs, or behavior. Through the use of logic, evidence, and emotion you work to secure the willingness of acceptance of your listeners. TO PERSUADE OR TO CONVINCE

Pathos Ethos Logos THREE SOURCES OF PERSUASION

Persuasion is simply means by which one person can cause another to want to believe, to think, or to do. However, there is an art of effective persuasion using the different figures of speech and other compositional techniques called Rhetoric . THREE SOURCES OF PERSUASION

An effective persuader seeks out the special needs and attitudes of each audience prior in order to plan the most suited compositional technique for the listeners. Pathos: Analyzing the Needs of Your Listeners

Positive Audience Neutral Audience Disinterested Audience Opposed Audience FOUR KINDS OF AUDIENCES

It refers to the one that already agrees with your basic persuasive purpose. Your only task now is to deepen their feelings about the topic. POSITIVE AUDIENCE

It refers to the one that are neither for nor against your persuasion – they simply do not know much about it. Their basic need is for information that will make it possible for them to form an opinion. NEUTRAL AUDIENCE

It refers to the one that knows about the topic but are not interested in it. This kind of audience needs to be electrified – to be shown the seriousness of the topic in which they will be affected; be motivated to care. DISINTERESTED AUDIENCE

It refers to the one that are composed of people who disagree with your stand on a topic. They are the most difficult kind of audience for a persuasion. Their need is first for open-mindedness, then conviction. You must first succeed in getting a fair hearing to your side, then attempt to convince them to your viewpoint. OPPOSED AUDIENCE

No matter how logical or appealing a speaker may be, if the listeners do not respect his character, there is a little chance of successful persuasion. Thus, a speaker must establish ethos especially when persuading an opposed audience. Ethos: Establishing your Prestige

Preparedness Competence Sincerity Credibility Charisma FIVE COMPONENTS OF ETHOS

Persuasion's job is to show listeners how to fulfill their needs and desires. Thus, logic is a very powerful tool of persuasion. Logos: Being Logical

Being logical means using valid evidence and correct reasoning. Evidence is the raw material that backs up your persuasion. While reasoning is the process of putting it together into a logical argument. Logos: Being Logical

Sometimes, communication is designed almost exclusively for the purpose of amusement, to entertain. To Entertain

One major function as well of communication is expressing yourselves. The aim is not so much to produce an action, or elicit an acceptance of an idea but simply to express yourself in a curative manner. It relates to the resolution of internal conflicts, clarifying one's image, or finding sources of satisfaction. To Express
