Without communication, societies could not organize into groups, mark the passage of individuals, debate, make decisions, and change ourselves in necessary ways.
Communication performs five (5) important functions to a society. To Motivate Into Action To Give Information To Persuade or Convince To Entertain To Express FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNICATION
As far as functions of communication are concerned, all instances involve wanting our listeners to do something; that is, in all instances the main function of communication is to motivate into action. TO MOTIVATE INTO ACTION
We are curious beings. We are interested in history, current events, trending products, new discoveries, and among other things. Another function of communication is imparting new knowledge or giving information to our listeners. TO GIVE INFORMATION
Another function of communication is to persuade our listeners – to influence their attitudes, beliefs, or behavior. Through the use of logic, evidence, and emotion you work to secure the willingness of acceptance of your listeners. TO PERSUADE OR TO CONVINCE

Persuasion is simply means by which one person can cause another to want to believe, to think, or to do. However, there is an art of effective persuasion using the different figures of speech and other compositional techniques called Rhetoric . THREE SOURCES OF PERSUASION
An effective persuader seeks out the special needs and attitudes of each audience prior in order to plan the most suited compositional technique for the listeners. Pathos: Analyzing the Needs of Your Listeners
Positive Audience Neutral Audience Disinterested Audience Opposed Audience FOUR KINDS OF AUDIENCES
It refers to the one that already agrees with your basic persuasive purpose. Your only task now is to deepen their feelings about the topic. POSITIVE AUDIENCE
It refers to the one that are neither for nor against your persuasion – they simply do not know much about it. Their basic need is for information that will make it possible for them to form an opinion. NEUTRAL AUDIENCE
It refers to the one that knows about the topic but are not interested in it. This kind of audience needs to be electrified – to be shown the seriousness of the topic in which they will be affected; be motivated to care. DISINTERESTED AUDIENCE
It refers to the one that are composed of people who disagree with your stand on a topic. They are the most difficult kind of audience for a persuasion. Their need is first for open-mindedness, then conviction. You must first succeed in getting a fair hearing to your side, then attempt to convince them to your viewpoint. OPPOSED AUDIENCE
No matter how logical or appealing a speaker may be, if the listeners do not respect his character, there is a little chance of successful persuasion. Thus, a speaker must establish ethos especially when persuading an opposed audience. Ethos: Establishing your Prestige

Persuasion's job is to show listeners how to fulfill their needs and desires. Thus, logic is a very powerful tool of persuasion. Logos: Being Logical
Being logical means using valid evidence and correct reasoning. Evidence is the raw material that backs up your persuasion. While reasoning is the process of putting it together into a logical argument. Logos: Being Logical
Sometimes, communication is designed almost exclusively for the purpose of amusement, to entertain. To Entertain
One major function as well of communication is expressing yourselves. The aim is not so much to produce an action, or elicit an acceptance of an idea but simply to express yourself in a curative manner. It relates to the resolution of internal conflicts, clarifying one's image, or finding sources of satisfaction. To Express
SPEECHES FOR DIFFERENT OCCASIONS
Speech of Introduction It is intended to build enthusiasm and interest for the audience. It shows the listeners the relationship among the speaker's background and the chosen topic plus the audience's interests.
Speech of Presentation This typically refers to speeches from award ceremonies, or occasions when gifts are presented. The primary goal is to honor the recipient and explaining the intent for which an award is being given.
Speech of Acceptance Simply put, this refers to the speech of thanking both those bestowing the award and those who helped the recipient gain it. Be certain to thank everyone involved in both presenting it to you and to everyone who helped you attain it.
Sales Presentations It refers to presentations or speeches whose basic purpose is to sell a product or service. Often such speaking takes place one-on-one basic with a single salesperson talking.
Public Relation Speeches It refers to speeches that aim to promote companies, government services, and educational institutions to maintain public and positive image. It outlines the mission, vision, and goals of the organization.
