What is a clause? A clause is a group of words that contain a verb and it’s subject. Eg : The girl went for a swim.

Independent clause: A main thought that can stand alone and makes sense by itself. Eg : The girl put on a crown. The girl put on a crown because she wanted to look like a princess . The girl put on a crown is an independent clause as it makes sense as a stand alone sentence.

Dependent / subordinate clause Eg : The girl put on a crown because she wanted to look like a princess. Is linked to and adds meaning to the independent clause and does the work of an adverb, adjective or noun.

Examples: I first met her in Paris where I lived as a child. Mum is taking me to buy shoes after she finishes work.
