Independent Sample T –Test
(Procedure and Output in SPSS)

Data View
Data view represents the
cases/data points for
different variables.

Variable view
Variable view represents the
properties of all variables.
One can toggle between
data and variable view with
the shortcut ctrl + t.

Step 1
Running Independent
Sample T-Test:
Go to the Analyze tab in
Menu bar, click on Compare
Means option and select
Independent Sample T Test.

Step 2
Selecting Variable:
Select continuous variable
and click on arrow to drag it
in Test Variable(s) box then
drag categorical variable in
the Grouping Variable box.

Step 3
Click on the Define groups
button that will open Define
group dialog box.

Step 4
Enter the specified group
value of factor for which we
want to run T test.

Step 5
Running Analysis:
Click on the OK button to
get the output window
with results.

Descriptive Statistics
This table displays the
basic descriptive statistics
for each sub-group of
Independent Variable.

T -Test
This part of table displays
the Levene statistic with
it’s significance value to
test the hypothesis for
equality of variance
This part of table displays T –statistic
with it’s significance value to test
hypothesis for equal means. It also
represents df, mean difference and
95% Confidence Interval for
differences
