ROLLING STOCK LOCOMOTIVE WORKSHOP
❑TheLocomotiveworkshop,whichisapartofNorthernRailway,wasestablishedbyOudhand
RohilkhandRailwayatLucknowintheyear1868foroverhaulingofSteamLocomotives.
❑In1925,thisworkshopbecamepartofEastIndiaRailways.Post-Independence-groupingof
ZonalRailwaysbroughtthisworkshopunderNorthernRailway.
❑Initslongjourneyinserviceofthenation,ithasexcelledinadaptingtolatesttechnologyand
haskeptpacewithchangingrequirementsofmotivepowerandrollingstockofIndian
Railways.
❑Theworkshopwhichwasestablishedprimarilyformaintenanceofsteamlocomotivesstarted
maintainingdiesellocomotivesfrom1975,Electriclocomotivesfrom1987,DEMUtrainsets
from1996andrecentlyinJune2018turnedoutfirstrakeofMEMUtrainsets.

MEMU and EMU

mainlineversionofthelocalEMUtrains.MEMUtrainrunsthroughACoverhead
line.
❑ThefirstMEMUTrainwasstartedon17October1995,betweenRaipurand
Bilaspur.
❑EMUisElectricMultipleUnittrainconsistingofself-propelledcarriages
usingelectricityasthemotivepowerdesignedforurbanandsemi-urbanareas.
❑ThefirstEMUservicewaslaunchedin1925fromVictoriaTerminustoCoorla
Harbour.
❑Thesesystemrequiresnoseparatelocomotive,aselectrictractionmotorsare
incorporatedwithinoneoranumberofthecarriages.

RAILWAY ELECTRIFICATION SYSTEM
❑Railwayelectrificationsystemsusingalternatingcurrent(AC)at25kilovolts(kV)areused
worldwide,especiallyforhigh-speedrail.Itisusuallysuppliedatthestandardutility
frequency(typically50or60Hz),whichsimplifiestractionsubstations.
❑Thedevelopmentof25kVACelectrificationiscloselyconnectedwiththatofsuccessfully
usingutilityfrequency.Thedevelopmentof25kVACelectrificationiscloselyconnected
withthatofsuccessfullyusingutilityfrequency..
❑Anelectriclocomotiveisalocomotivepoweredbyelectricityfromoverheadlines,athird
railoron-boardenergystoragesuchasabatteryorasupercapacitor.
❑Electricpowerfor25kVACelectrificationisusuallytakendirectlyfromthethree-
phasetransmissionsystem.
❑Thesystemusesmultipleelectricalunitsoperatingon25kVACdrawnfromoverheadlines.

PANTOGRAPH
❑Apantographisanapparatusmountedonthe
roofofanelectrictrain,tramorelectricbusto
collectpowerthroughcontactwithanoverhead
line.
❑Pantographactsasmobilecurrentcarrying
equipmentwhichismountedontheroof.It
collectspowerfromtheoverheadequipment
underbothstaticanddynamicconditionsand
transfersittoEMU.
❑Thewholeassemblyofpantographismounted
onthefourfootinsulatorsonroof.Itisoperated
foritsraising/loweringpositionswith
compressedairthroughservomotor.
❑Ballbearingsareprovidedforeasymovementof
articulationateachjoint.Flexibleshuntsare
providedtogivecontinuousflowofcurrent.

Components of a Pantograph
❑Pantographsworkasmovablerods
tocollectpowerfromtheoverhead
wire.Compressedairfromthe
brakingsystemcontrolsthe
movementofthismechanism.
❑Thesimplefunctionsofthe
pantographinclude:
•Providecontinuouscontactthat
collectstheelectriccurrentfrom
theoverheadlines
•Transfertheelectricalpowerfrom
thecontactwiretotheelectric
generatorsormotors

VACUUM CIRCUIT BREAKER
❑Abreakerwhichusedvacuumasanarc
extinctionmediumiscalledavacuumcircuit
breaker.
❑Inthiscircuitbreaker,thefixedandmoving
contactisenclosedinapermanentlysealed
vacuuminterrupter.Thearcisextinctasthe
contactsareseparatedinhighvacuum.
❑Itismainlyusedformediumvoltageranging
from11KVto33KV.
❑Itisthemostimportantswitchingandprotecting
equipmentwhichconnects&disconnectsthe25
kVOHEpowersupplytotheEMUthrough
pantograph.
❑Itisasingleinterruptertypevacuumcircuit
breaker.Vacuumhasexcellentinsulating
propertiesandthereforeasmallcontactgapcan
withstandhighvoltages.

Advantages
❑Vacuumcircuitbreakerdoesnotrequireanyadditionalfillingofoilorgas.Theydonotneed
periodicrefilling.
❑Rapidrecoveryofhighdielectricstrengthoncurrentinterruptionsthatonlyahalfcycleorless
arcingoccursafterpropercontactseparation.
Disadvantages
❑Requirementsofhightechnologyforproductionofvacuuminterrupters.
❑Itneedsadditionalsurgesuppressorsfortheinterruptionoflowmagnetizingcurrentsinacertain
range.
Applications
❑Whenthevoltageishighandcurrenttobeinterruptedislowthesebreakershavedefinitesuperiority
overtheotherbreakers.
❑Forlowfaultinterruptingcapacitiesthecostislowincomparisontootherinterruptingdevices.

RELAY
❑ Arelayisanelectricallyoperatedswitch.
whichsensethesignalatabnormalcondition
andsendthatsignaltocircuitbreaker.
❑ Relayscomeinmanyvarieties,themost
simpleofwhichareDCandAC
versions.DCrelaysrunoffofthevoltage
thatcomesoutofabattery,whichonlyflows
inonedirection,andtheDCstandsforDirect
Current.

Current,whichiswhatyouhavecomingout
ofthewallinyourstandard120VAC
receptacle.

POWER CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION

OVERHEAD EQUIPMENT
❑OverheadEquipment(OHE)inelectric
tractionsystemareusedfortransmitting
electricalenergytotheelectriclocomotives,
trolleybuses,tramsandotherelectrictraction
systems.
❑Asanstandardpractice,anindependentMast
isusedtosupporttheOHEforeachtrackto
obtainmechanicalindependence.
❑Thetypeofconductorusedis25kVtraction
consistsofastrandedcatenaryfromwhich
trolley-wireorcontactwireissuspendedby
meansofdroppers.
❑TheOHEissupportedbyswivelingtype
Cantileverbracketassembly.Atensionof
1000kgsisgivenineachconductori.e.,
CatenaryandContactwire.

OVERINE STRUCTURE
❑Alloverheadelectricalequipment,distribution
lines,transmissionlinesandfeedersmaybe
collectivelyreferredtoasoverheadlines.
❑Unlikeuninsulatedwiresattachedtocross
wiresbyclamps,acatenarysystemusestwo
wires–catenarywireandacontactwire.
❑Thecatenarywireishungbetweenline
structuresatspecifictensionandacontact
wireisattachedtoitatafrequentintervalby
droppers.
❑Catenarywirematerialismadeupoftiny
threadswhichfeedelectricitythroughtoa
vehiclefromthepantographwhichpresses
againsttheundersideofthelowestoverhead
wire-contactwire.

SAFETY RULES FOR OHE
❑ThefollowingrulesaresupplementarytotheGeneralandSubsidiaryRulesandthe
instructions.
❑Printedboardscontaininginstructionsregardingtreatmentofpersonssufferingfrom
electricshockshouldbeexhibitedineveryOHEmaintenancedepot,equipmentroom,
switchingstation,cabin,OHEInspectionCarshed,locoshed,OHEInspectionCar
andwiringtrainandalsoinofficesofSM,ASM,CYM,AYMandHTXR.
❑FirstAidBoxesshouldbekeptateveryswitchingstation,maintenancedepot,inOHE
InspectionCar,breakdownvehicleandwiringtrain.
❑Ropes,come-alongclamps,Triforetcshouldbetestedonceinsixmonthsatleast,in
thepresenceofanATFOandrecordofsuchtestsmaintainedineachdepot.

THE OHE LAYOUT PLAN
❑Theseprinciplesforpreparation,checkingandfinalizationofoverheadequipmentlayoutplans,
havebeenframedforstandardizationandguidanceofRailways/RailwayElectrificationProjects.
❑Insomecases,theprinciplesareobligatoryandshouldbefollowed.Inothercases,principleshave
beenevolvedtostandardizedesignsandtospeedupthework.
❑Theprinciplescouldberelaxedinspecial'cases,afterstudyingindividuallytheimplicationsto
arriveatthebestsolutionbothfromeconomicalandtechnicalpointsofview.
❑The“PrinciplesofpreparationandcheckingofOHElayoutplans”firstissuedbyerstwhile
RailwayElectrificationwasrevisedbyRDSOandissuedasNo.ETI/OHE/15inJuly,1983.
