Slide Content

Industrial Training on Construction of flexible pavement Under the guidance of UPPWD presented by Husn Bano (2110013145044) Faculty of Engineering & Technology, University of Lucknow Department of Civil Engineering 11/3/2023 1

TABLE OF CONTENT About UPPWD Details of project Flexible Pavement Construction process of surface layer Test Result 11/3/2023 2

ABOUT UTTAR PRADESH PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT UPPWD is responsible for the social, economic and industrial growth of the state. An agency of state Government for planning, construction, maintenance and all repairs work. Ex. Roads, Bridges and buildings of state government. UPPWD divides state into 18 zones for monitoring the work efficiently. Each zone is headed by zonal chief engineer. 11/3/2023 3

DETAIL OF PROJECT Name of project - Construction of Flexible pavement. Category of Road - Rural Road (ODR&VR) Site Location - Ekari, Fatehpur Total length of Road- 200m Widening of Pavement-3.5m. Earthen shoulder of 0.5m on each side. Grade of Bitumen used VG-10. Total Cost- 2.44 lacs. Fig.1 Site image 11/3/2023 4

FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT Flexible pavement is a road construction method using layers of materials, like asphalt and aggregate, to create a resilient and load-bearing surface. This type of pavement consist four layers: Sub-grade Granular sub Base Layer (GSB) Base Layer Surface Layer 11/3/2023 5 Fig 2. Flexible Pavement

CONSTRUCTION PROCESS OF SURFACE LAYER Preparation of existing surface Applying Prime Coat Applying Tack Coat Laying of pre-mix bitumen concrete and followed by rolling of carpet. Laying of seal coat on surface layer. 11/3/2023 6

PREPARATION OF EXISTING SURFACE Dust and other debris are removed by hydraulic sprayer. Required camber is properly checked. Depression is filled with aggregate. Fig.3 Surface cleaning machine 11/3/2023 7

PRIME COAT Applied between base course and asphalt layer. Function is to create adhesion between base course and asphalt layer. Waterproofing the surface of the base course. Material used is bitumen emulsion (ss-1). Bitumen emulsion is applied by spraying at rate 0.07kg/sqm. Fig.4 Emulsion 11/3/2023 8

TACK COAT Applied on the surface of base course which is treated by primer and cleaned with hydraulic sprayer. Function is to prevent the degradation of asphalt layer by providing adhesion between asphalt concrete layer. Material used is bitumen emulsion (RS-1). Bitumen emulsion is applied at rate of 0.25kg/sqm. 11/3/2023 9

BITUMEN CONCRETE It is pre-mix mixture consist bitumen of grade VG-20 and coarse aggregate of size 11.2-13.2mm. Applied on the surface by paver machine. Thickness of bitumen concrete is 20mm. Followed by rolling by vibratory roller. Fig.5 Bitumen concrete 11/3/2023 10

SEAL COAT The thin layer applied above the top surface course of pavement. Seal coat is mixture of bitumen (VG-10) and grit (size 2.36mm). Seal coat applied at a temp. of 110-150 ◦C. Road is open to traffic after 4 hours. Fig.6 Application of coat Fig.7 S eal coat F 11/3/2023 11
