Compound words or compounds are words formed by putting two or more words together to form a new word with a new meaning. To understand the meaning of the compound, it is important to determine the meaning of each word that makes up the new word. WHAT IS COMPOUND WORD?

Different types of compound word A closed or solid compound is one in which the two words do not have any spaces or hyphens separating them. They are usually considered as a single word. For example: Sunflower. For Example: Football Firefighter Notebook Superhero

Different types of compound word Open compound words are slightly different because they still appear as two separate words (there is a space between them). However, we consider them a compound because they are used together frequently.  For example: Living room Full moon Real estate  Ice cream

Different types of compound word Hyphenating words can be tricky as there are many rules to remember. However, the main point to remember is that, in most cases, a compound adjective is hyphenated if placed before the noun it modifies, but not if placed after the noun.  For example: Long-term Mother-in-law Good-hearted

Context clues are hints found within a sentence, paragraph, or passage that a reader can use to understand the meanings of new or unfamiliar words. What is context clues?

a. His emaciation , that is, his skeleton-like appearance, was frightening to see. “Skeleton-like appearance” is the definition of “emaciation.” b. Fluoroscopy , examination with a fluoroscope, has become a common practice. The commas before and after “ examination with a fluoroscope ” point out the definition of “fluoroscopy.” c. The dudeen – a short-stemmed clay pipe – is found in Irish folk tales. “a short-stemmed clay pipe” point out the definition of “ dudeen .”

a. Piscatorial creatures, such as flounder, salmon, and trout, live in the coldest parts of the ocean. “Piscatorial” obviously refers to fish. b. Celestial bodies , including the sun, moon, and stars, have fascinated man through the centuries. “Celestial” objects are those in the sky or heavens. c. In the course of man’s evolution, certain organs have atrophied . The appendix, for example, has wasted away from disuse. “Atrophied” means “wasted away.”

When the author provides a synonym (a word or phrase similar in definition) to help the reader understand the meaning of the unfamiliar word .
