Packaging and Repackaging Information for Community Use

Introduction Information explosion, speeded up by developments in ICT, is associated with lack of time and skills needed to search for, retrieve, interpret, synthesis and apply information ( eg . in decision-making), resulting into failure to take full advantage of the abundance of information at disposal .

Introduction… Consequently, librarians need to design information services for such clientele based on diagnosis of their information needs , customising or “repackaging” information to match the needs and convenience of the user. Information repackaging then entails a systematic process of adding value to information services.

Introduction… These value added components would include but are not limited to information analysis, synthesis, editing, translating and transforming its symbolic and media formats . IR also ensures the currency, accuracy, pertinence, comprehensiveness, ease of comprehension (e.g. technical level, presentation style); and convenience of use (e.g. timing, format of coding ).

Introduction… Repackaging services, therefore are the result of attempts to cope with the information explosion and the competition for fast, reliable, convenient and efficient information support for corporate decision-making. IR services signal an on-going shift in library and information professions from documents to their content and from collections to their users , “ customised information services ”

Information Packaging & Repackaging: Definitions Packaging of information is a physical recording, arrangement and presentation of information on a given medium and in a given form . Repackaging of information is rearrangement of physical media in which information has been presented, which is tailored to the requirements of a specific clientele .

Definitions… Information repackaging involves selection, analysing, and processing information with a view of communicating a message in a convenient and effective form to a target audience defined for the purpose ( Dongardive , 2013) In other words, repackaging of information refers to the presentation of information in more understandable, readable, acceptable and usable forms .

The Aim of Repackaging The aim of repackaging is to enhance the acceptance and use of information products and the assimilation and recall of their contents. It is a systematic process of adding value to information services .

Functions of Repackaging As a saving tool. Information repackaging can save time, labour, and cost of the user. As a systematic and selective sorter of useful information. As a means for more extensive information transmission and delivery As a translation tool. As a means for the prompt delivery of relevant information .

Meeting user demands In order to design the repackaging, it is essential to have specific information about the target audience so as to collect, process and apply the required information and design and repackage of information according to user demands . The process of repackaging begins with the selection of information and evaluation of content in line with the needs of users .

Requirements for Repackaging Information Sturges and Chimsen (1996) list three requirements for repackaging information: The materials should be collected and organised efficiently There should be the capacity to analyse their content and create new information packages from them . The new products should be disseminated freely.

Strategies for Information Repackaging 1. Current Awareness Services (CAS) This is system for reviewing newly available documents, selecting items relevant to the need of an individual or group and recording them so that notification may be sent to those individuals or groups to whose needs they are related. CAS involves making accession or acquisition lists, bibliographies, etc.

Strategies… 2. Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) “ It is an anticipatory service which involves channeling of new information to researchers, individuals, or groups on the basis of their pre-determined needs and interests. SDI is a modification of CAS. Is a personal CAS providing researchers with the latest publications on a specific research topic .

Strategies… 3. Translation of Materials Language barrier is one of the greatest challenge to the flow of information thus the translation of materials is one of the important techniques in repackaging of information

Strategies… 4. Data Compilation and Processing Data in quantitative and statistical forms can be made available in a more understandable form by using tables, bar charts, pie charts, etc. Such forms of arrangement display data more meaningfully and facilitates comparison between them.

Other IR Strategies Drama Storytelling The use of songs Audio–visual materials Oral transmission Poetry Social media etc.
