Information storage and retrieval in simple words! Information storage and retrieval is the systamatic process of collecting data so that they can be located and displayed on request. Computers and data processing techniques have made possible the high-speed, selective retrieval of large amount of information for government, comercial and academic purposes.
Identification of information storage It can refer to a place like a storage room where paper records are kept. It can also refer to a storage device such as a computer hard disk , CD, DVD or similar device which can hold data.
Types of storage CD/DVD
HARD DRIVE PEN DRIVE
FLOPPY DISK
Identification of information retrieval Information retrieval (IR) is the process of obtaining information system resources that are relevant to an information need from a collection of those resources. In simple words “the tracing and recovery of specific information from stored data.”
Components of ir The main IR components are given below. DATABASE SEARCH ENGINE LANGUAGE INTERFACE
DATABASE : A database is systematic collection of data. They support electronic storage and manipulation of data. Database make data management easy. SEARCH ENGINE : A program that searches and identifies item in database that correspond to keywords or characters specified by the user. Search procedure can be categorised as basic or advance search procedure. Capacity of search mechanism determines what retrieval technique will be available to user and how information Stored in database can be retrieved.
LANGUAGE : Information relies on language when being processed, transferred or communicated. LANGUAGE CAN BE OF TWO TYPES. NATURAL : These languages can be easily understood and created by any user. CONTROLLED: Controlled languages are such vocabulary languages that are typically created and maintained by a particular organization. INTERFACE : In computing , An interface is shared boundary across which two or more sperate components of a computer system exchange information.
Retrieval techniques THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF RETRIEVAL TECHNIQUES BASIC RETRIEVAL ADVANCED RETRIEVAL
Basic retrieval techniques BOOLEAN SEARCHING : LOGICAL OPERATION ARE ALSO KNOWN AS BOOLEAN OPERATORS. The AND operates for narrowing down search.
The OR operates for broadening a search.
The NOT operates for excluding unwanted results. PROXIMITY SEARCHING : A proximity search allows you to specify how close two or more words must be with each other in order to register a match. THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF PROXIMITY SEARCH. WORD PROXIMITY SENTENCE PROXIMITY PARAGRAPH PROXIMITY
RANGE SEARCHING: It is most useful with numerical information. These following options are usually available for range searching. • Greater than (>)- less than (<) • Equal to (=) • Not equal to (/=or 0)“ • Greater than OR equal to (>=) •Less than OR equal to (<=)
Advanced retrieval FUZZY SEARCHING: A fuzzy search is a process that locates Web pages that are likely to be relevant to a search argument even when the argument does not exactly correspond to the desired information. QUERY EXPANSION: Query expansion (QE) is the process of reformulating a given query to improve retrieval performance in information retrieval operations, particularly in the context of query understanding.
Ir systems An information retrieval (IR) system is a set of algorithms that facilitate the relevance of displayed documents to searched queries.
In simple words, it is to sort and rank documents based on the queries.
