INSIDE YOUR BODY 4th GRADE SCIENCE

PARTS OF THE BODY

Anus Nutrition is the combination of processes which supply our body with the building materials and energy we need to live.

THE DIGESTIVE PROCESS The digestive system helps us to get nutrients . Digestion is the process that enables us to obtain nutrients from food we eat. The digestion starts in the mouth .

1. We chew food in our mouth and mix it with saliva . 2. This mixture goes down the oesophagus to the stomach. 3. In the stomach , it mixes with gastric juices. 4. The mixture passes into the small intestine as a thick liquid. 5, Any undigested food and waste continue on the large intestine, where water is absorbed and faeces are formed. 6. Finally, faeces are excreted through the anus .

THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM The respiratory system helps us breathe . LUNGS TRACHEA DIAPHRAGM

Air enters through the nose, mouth, trachea and bronchi .

Oxygen passes through the alveoli to the lungs .

Then, we breathe out carbon dioxide . The diaphragm is a muscle below the lungs that moves when we breathe .

BLOOD CIRCULATION Adult’s body has about four to six litres of blood. There are three types of blood vessels: - ARTERIES and VEINS are thick. - Capillaries connect veins and arteries. They are thin and fragile. ARTERIES carry blood away from the heart to other organs. VEINS carry blood back to the heart

Blood: a red liquid which transports substances throughout the body. Blood vessels: arteries, veins and capillaries. The heart is connected to the blood vessels and pumps blood through them to all parts of the body.

The circulatory system transports blood through the heart and around the body in the arteries and veins . ARTERIES VEINS HEART

EXCRETORY SYSTEM The excretory system eliminates waste from our body.

5 SENSES

We have 5 senses. Our organs detect information and send this information to the brain .

SIGHT

Our eyes are the organs of sight.

Light enters the eye and makes an image on the retina . The information goes along the optic nerve and goes to the brain .

THE SENSE OF HEARING

Our ears are the organs of hearing .

When sound enters the ear, the liquid inside the cochlea moves. The information goes along the auditory nerve and goes to the brain .

SMELL

Our nose is the organ of smell. Air enters through the nostrils . The information goes along the olfactory nerve and goes to the brain .

TASTE

The information goes along the nerves and goes to the brain . Our tongue is the organ of taste. The taste buds of our tongue identify the different tastes.

TOUCH

Our skin is the organ of touch . The information goes along the sensory nerves and goes to the brain .

SKELETON The skeleton supports our body. The skeleton protects our organs. Our bones are connected at joints : elbows, knees, shoulders, wrists and ankles.

MUSCLES Muscles help us move , give our body shape and protect our organs.

MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM The testicles , inside the scrotum , produce sperm. The sperm travels along the urethra to the outside of the body. URETHRA PENIS TESTICLES SCROTUM

FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM The ovaries produce ova . Reproduction starts with fertilisation: when the sperm joins an ovum.
