ABOUT US : The state of Rajasthan is immensely rich in historical and archaeological source material which is scattered all over the region, throwing a flood of light on its ancient history and culture. The Department of Archaeology and Museums, as an attached office under the Department of Art and Culture, is the premier organization for the archaeological researches and protection of the cultural heritage of the state. The Department since its inception in 1950 has been making concerted efforts to discover, preserve, protect, exhibit and interpret the cultural legacy embodied in various forms of art and architecture. At present, the Department has 21 museums, 2 art galleries,342 protected monuments and 43 archaeological sites under its control comprising of sacred and secular monuments, such as rock shelters, exquisite temples, colossal mosques, massive forts, splendid palaces, artistic cenotaphs, carved and painted havelies . The Department has more than 3 lac objects of different types in its museums as well as different branches of the directorate. The object comprises prehistoric Stone Age tools, excavated material collected from different sites, terracotta figurines, miniature paintings, and Sculptures ranges in date from 6th century to the 19th century AD, coins, inscriptions, metal objects, arms, weapons, musical instruments, textile, stuffed animals and other miscellaneous obiects etc. ACTIVITIES Preservation, Restoration and Conservation of Monuments, antiquities and Archaeological Sites Excavation and Exploration • Re - organization and Development of Museums Research and Publication • Survey and Documentation Numismatic Branch • Exhibitions, Seminars, Lectures
