Integrated Architecture® Value KRIS DORNAN – WINTER 2024
Is the group responsible for process automation applications within your organization also responsible for the following complementary automation applications? Four in five respondents (79%) said that the group responsible for process automation applications was also responsible for safety systems , while three in five (59%) were also responsible for discrete logic . 65% of those who’s organizations don’t have an integrated approach said they their organization would benefit from the approach . Base: All respondents (n=181). Process Automation Application Responsibilities Base: Respondents who said “No” to using complementary applications (n=34). Do you believe that your organization would benefit from a more integrated approach to process automation and discrete-logic/safety-system applications? Why or why not? (Open Ended)
Write-in Comments Do you believe that your organization would benefit from a more integrated approach to process automation and discrete-logic/safety-system applications? Why or why not? (Open End) No, w e have had our process analyzed by BMW engineer and no further automation is possible in our process. Not currently at our facility. I think the processes would be more efficient. Yes. AI is coming. None Likely. Cost overshadows some integration concerns in my organization. Yes, communicating with existing processes, space constraints and safety seem to be secondary considerations when approached with solutions. Already have an integrated approach Not sure. Would have to see how it applies Yes, because it would resolve shortfalls in the system. Yes. Better/more consistent functionality. Yes, anything that can help streamline the whole process and make it food and employee safe. YES Yes - we must upgrade Not currently. There are several reasons that can't be described here but few are: small batch process, not enough infrastructure ready, Not sure. More research is needed No, I don't think so At this point it is unknown. Older machines must be upgraded with safety systems No. We are a small company and can't justify the investment currently. Yes, the integrated approach would benefit my organization and would be more efficient Perhaps. Some is outsourced. Sometimes coordination and responsibility are a bear to work through as not everyone is on the same page. Yes, it would quicken processes and reduce repetitive movements. Yes, it will help remove much of the burden placed on individuals, and potentially remove mistakes Process automation would help with decreasing human errors Stream line of costs I think It would be beneficial, but since I don’t really know much about, I’m not sure Yes, with the shortage of people we have to look for automation for our future. YES, BECAUSE BOTH SYSTEMS ARE INTERELATED Yes. If an organization wants to control the process simultaneously, the Best decision is to use it Yes. I think it will help us save money in the long run Not currently. There are too many variables in the process. Integrated would be beneficial when it is done with a total system compatibility and would most likely impact startup cost. I'm not sure
These are the biggest challenges that we hear from customers Addressing workforce & skills shortages Improving efficiency Reducing cybersecurity risks Building flexible equipment Gaining better business insights faster
Addressing these challenges requires a more integrated approach Cybersecurity Power Safety Process From components and islands of automation To a unified , system-wide approach Motion Batch Different Tools Fragmented Workflows Siloed Data Consistent Tools Unified Workflows Connected Data An integrated approach across industrial applications

Key Benefits Improve efficiency Shorten training times Reduce labor intensity Minimize safety risks Boost productivity Speed time to value Components that are integrated by design A comprehensive portfolio eases integration with components that are designed to easily integrate with each other. Standardized control across disciplines Common components, tools and code enable workers to be quickly cross-trained to operate and maintain different machines and equipment. Productive safety solutions Unified safety and motion control along with features such as safe speed and safe direction help protect personnel from hazards and improve productivity simultaneously. Integrated control Unify processes with multi-discipline control enabled by a scalable automation & information infrastructure
Imagine your safety and motion applications worked together in unison and integrated easily with your performance dashboards. Maintenance doesn’t have to involve removing physical barriers to access machines and equipment. Instead, you can slow down machines to a speed that allows maintenance workers to get the job done safely. With better visibility, you can proactively address safety issues before they stop operations. Improve safety and productivity simultaneously With Integrated Architecture®, you can prioritize safety without sacrificing efficiency
Key Benefits Reduce labor intensity Shorten project timelines Reduce application complexity Improve Efficiency Speed time to market Consistent user experience Reusable code libraries and a common design environment across a broad range of disciplines streamline workflows for improved efficiency. Accelerated Design Code management software and libraries enable engineers to configure new equipment without manual, custom integration. Generative AI tools speed the coding process. Reduced design risk Save time and build better systems with virtual commissioning. By creating digital representations of your designs, you can validate, test and optimize as you go.
