Integrated Science November 12th 2024 Electricity Meters

Electricity Meters Objectives: Identify analogue and digital electricity meters To read an electrical meter to determine energy usage Read analogue and digital meter Use kilowatt hour as energy term (unit) Calculate the cost of electrical energy usage

Electrical Meters Electricity boards measure energy consumption using electricity meters in homes. They use a unit of energy called a kilowatt-hour (kWh). 1 kWh is the energy supplied to a 1 kW (1000 W) appliance for 1 hour. Electricity meters can be in the form of an analogue display , or a digital display.

Analogue Display Analogue displays - where dials rotate for each digit. Analogue meters are being replaced by more modern digital meters. This meter reading below is 60279 units of electricity (kWh).

What is the meter reading for the Analogue Meter Below?

Digital Display Digital display - where numbers change and can be read directly

Cost of Electrical Energy Usage Electricity suppliers read meters, perhaps on a monthly basis, or you can read the meter and send in the readings. You will be charged for the number of kilo-watt hours used.

Example: A consumer used 100 units (kWh) of electricity in a month. The first 50 units were charged on a block 1 tariff of 65 cents per kWh, and the next 50 units where Block 2 at 70 cents per kWh. The fuel surcharge was 40 cents per kWh used. What did the consumer pay for their electricity? Cost of Electrical Energy Usage Cont’d

Answer Fuel surcharge = 40 x 100 = 4000 cents = $40 Block 1 charge = 50 x 65 = 3250 cents = $32.50 Block 2 charge = 70 x 50 = 3500 cents = $35.00 Total = $107.50

Class exercise - Complete on Loose leaf What is the difference between an analogue and a digital electricity meter? Illustrate your answers with examples. A consumer used 200 units (kWh) of electricity in a month 50 units were charged on a block 1 tariff of 60 cents per kWh, and the next 150 were block 2, charged at 70 cents per kWh. The fuel surcharge was 40 cents per kWh used. What was the total electricity bill?

SBA Activity Read and record your electricity meter at home each day at the same time for one week (THIS MUST INCLUDE A WEEKEND) Write up your investigation and show your results in a graph Interpret your results

Homework - Worksheets (Meter & Circuit Activity)

Class exercise A consumer used 250 units (kWh) of electricity in a month 150 units were charged on a block 1 tariff of 60 cents per kWh, and the next 100 were block 2, charged at 80 cents per kWh. The fuel surcharge was 30 cents per kWh used. What was the total electricity bill?
