Topic: Personal Hygiene

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this lesson students will be able to:
•Explain why personal hygiene is important
•List the main ways to maintain personal hygiene
•Explain the importance of practising a healthy lifestyle

Mystery Odour
Imagine you walk into your favorite classroom. It's
a typical day, but something's...off. There's a
faint, yet noticeable, smell. It's not a bad smell,
exactly, but it's...present. You look around, and
everyone else seems to be sniffing the air too. Is
it the old gym shoes someone left in their locker?
Did someone spill their lunch? Or is it something
else entirely? Suddenly, you realize...it might be
you! Or maybe it's your best friend? How do you
figure it out, and more importantly, how do you
fix it?

Personal Hygiene
1.What does personal hygiene mean to you?
2.Reflect on current personal hygiene habits that you have and
share out.

What is Personal Hygiene?
Good personal hygiene is about keeping your body clean. It also helps to protect you from
getting infections such as gastroenteritis, colds and flu and COVID-19.
Washing your hands with soap removes germs that can make you ill. Having good personal
hygiene will also help prevent you from spreading diseases to other people.
Personal hygiene includes:
cleaning your body every day
washing your hands with soap and water after going to the toilet
brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day
covering your mouth and nose with a tissue (or your sleeve) when sneezing or coughing
washing your hands after handling pets and other animals

Why Hygiene is Important?
Your body’s natural smells become stronger at puberty and personal hygiene becomes
more important. Nobody likes to get too close to someone with a very strong personal
odour. So when you reach puberty, you have to ensure high standards of personal
hygiene. It is important for people to practice good hygiene for many reasons,
including: Reduced possibility of infection or disease. Improved self-esteem. Improved
perception from others in our social groups.

Did you know?
Your body has nearly two million sweat glands. They release sweat to cool down the
body when necessary

Ways to Maintain Personal Hygiene
1. Wash Your Hands Frequently: Washing your hands is one of the most effective ways to
reduce the spread of disease. You should especially wash your hands before and after you
eat, after going to the bathroom and when you come into contact with someone who is sick.
In order to achieve effective results, make sure you wash your hands properly.
●Wet your hands with clean water and apply soap.
●Lather your hands by rubbing them thoroughly with soap.
●Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds.
●Rinse your hands well.
●Dry your hands with a towel or air dry.

Ways to Maintain Personal Hygiene
2. Bathe: Cleaning your body washes away dead skin cells and dirt and helps fight the spread of
disease. For older adults, it’s recommended to shower or take a bath at least twice a week to achieve
the positive effects.
3. Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day: Make sure you are brushing your teeth twice a day, once in the
morning and once at night, to maintain good oral hygiene along with regular dental checkups.
4. Floss Your Teeth Daily: In addition to brushing your teeth, floss your teeth once a day for optimal oral
hygiene.
5. Take Care of Your Nails: Cleaning and trimming your nails reduces your risk of hangnails and infected
nail beds.
6. Wear Clean Clothes: After you wear clothes, wash them with a detergent and dry them immediately
upon rinsing. Dirty clothes can harbor bacteria that could lead to body odor or even skin irritations.
7. Cover Your Mouth When Your Cough or Sneeze: This is extremely important to avoid spreading
germs to people around you.
8. Get Restful Sleep: Restful sleep is essential to wellbeing, no matter your age. It is recommended for
all adults to sleep between seven to nine hours a night.

Ways to Maintain Personal Hygiene
9. Balanced diet: Eating the right types of food in the right
quantities will help you to stay healthy.
10. Exercise: Taking regular exercise, helps you to maintain a
healthy weight, and enables you to enjoy an active lifestyle.

Importance of Practising a Healthy Lifestyle
Living a healthy lifestyle is important for anyone who
wants to feel their best and stay healthier as they get
older. However, we are presented with such a huge
amount of advice every day it can be confusing to work
out what is best when it comes to health, and
preventative healthcare can be a baffling topic. Different
messages are conveyed about wellbeing and figuring
out what advice to follow can be a struggle. But living a
healthy lifestyle doesn’t need to be complicated.
