Conflict and its nature
Conflict -any situation in which incompatible goals,
attitudes, emotions, or behaviors lead to
disagreement or opposition between two or more
parties.
Generally,conflictsarethoughttobedestructiveor
harmful.Butnotallconflictsaredestructive.It
mayalsobeconstructive(especiallyintergroup
conflict).Therefore,managermustknowwhento
stimulatedconflictandwhentoresolveit.

Level of conflicts
Intrapersonalconflict:Althoughmostroleconflictoccurswhen
anemployee’ssupervisororpeerssendconflictingexpectations
tohimorher,itispossibleforintrapersonalroleconflictto
emergefromwithinanindividuals,asaresultofcompetingroles
taken.
Interpersonalconflict:Interpersonalconflictisaconflictwhich
isoccurredbytwopeoplewithinagroup,departmentandan
organization.
Intergroupconflict:Intergroupistheconflictthatisoccurred
betweentwogroups,ortwodifferentdepartmentswithinan
organization,andalsowithindifferentorganization.
Therefore,managersmustknowwhentostimulateconflictand
whentoresolve.

Sources of conflicts
Interpersonalconflictarisesfromavarietyofsources.Theyare:
Organizationalchange:Peopleholddifferingviewsoverthedirectionto
go,theroutestotakeandtheirlikelysuccess,theresourcestobeused,and
theprobableoutcomes.
Personalityclashes:Noteveryonethinks,feels,looks,oractalike.So
therearesomepossibletoconflictbetweentwoormoreperson.
Differentsetsofvalue:Differentphilosophymaydiverge,ortheirethical
valuesmayleadthemindifferentdirections
Threatstostatus:Varioussocialrankinoursocietydriveforceasaperson
strugglestomaintainadesiredimage.
Contrastingperceptions:People’sperceptionandexpectationare
different.Itisverysimplethatallpeople’sperceptionwillnotbesame,so
thatitiseasytoconflictbetweentwopersons.
Lackoftrust:Whensomeonehasarealorperceivedreasonnottotrustto
another,thepotentialforconflictrises.

andteamworkmaybedeteriorated.
Distrustmaybegrownamong
people.
Somepeoplemayfeeldefeated
whiletheselfimageofotherswill
decline.

employeeswillbereduced.
Positiveeffects
Peoplearestimulatedtosearch
forimprovedapproachesthatlead
tobetterresults.
Itmakesthemtomovecreative
andexperimentalwithnewideas.
Oneshiddenproblemsare
broughttosurfaceandtrytomake
asolution.
Onestheconflictisresult,the

Conflict outcome
1.Ina“Loss-loss”situation
conflictdeterioratesboththe
parties,bothofthemarein
aworsesituation,andthen
theywerebefore.
2.“Loss-win”isasituationin
whichoneparty/person(A)
isdefeated,whileother
person(B)isvictorious.
3.“Win-loss”isasituationinwhich
oneperson(A)isvictorious,while
theotherperson(B)isdefeated.
4.“Win-win”isasituationinwhich
bothpartiesperceivethatthey
arenowinabetterpositionthan
theywerebeforetheconflict
began.

Resolution of strategies
Avoiding(Lose-lose):Bothpartieshavethephysicalandmental
withdrawalfromtheconflictwillleadtothe“lose-lose”outcome.
Smoothing(Lose-wine):Onepersonaccommodatestheotherperson’s
interest.Thissituationwillleadto“lose-wine”.
Forcing(Wine-lose):Thisstrategyreliesondominancetoachieve
personalgoalattheexpenseofotherparty’sinterest.
Confronting(Wine-wine):therebothpartiesfacetheconflictdirectly
andworkitthroughamutuallysatisfactorysolution.Theresultisthe
“wine-wine”.
