intertext

Rearrange the jumbled letters to decode the needed words. After doing so, put these words together inside the box below to unlock the meaning of the given term.

Intertextuality or intertext is one method of text development that enables the author to make text based on another text. It happens when some properties of an original text are incorporated in the text that is created by another author.

One good reason why it occurs is perhaps the second writer is greatly affected or influenced by the first writer leading to a combination of imitation and creation.

Example: 1. Taylor Swift’s song “ Love Story” makes intertextuality references to Romeo and Juliet and the “ Scarlet Letter”: “ Cause you were Romeo, I was a scarlet letter and my daddy said stay away from Juliet.

COMMON CONCEPTS OF INTERTEXTUALITY

Allusion An indirect reference on something or someone from classic or famous literature.

example Chocolate is Jacob’s Kryptonite. Chocolate = Kryptonite

Example The lid of Pandora’s box had flown open and had come off suddenly after smashing the hinges, and Hope had flown out of the window.”

Parody Usually seen on comedy shows on television. An imitation of a work in a satirical (sarcastic) manner.

quotation A direct reference to another text. Done by inserting famous lines from a previous text.

example We should see things not on how it looks but based on how we feel, as to what the Little Prince said, “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” Here, the speaker used a direct quotation from the novel “the little prince to support his point.

Adaptation A recreation of a famous piece. Free to somehow deviate from the original piece’s details. Must stick to the original storyline.

example

pastiche Which is an imitation of the style or character of the work of one or more other artists like painting, architectural designs and music. It gives homage.

Importance of intertext It leads readers to a much richer experience of reading. It provides new interpretations as it brings into the text another meaning, concept or story. It shows the connections and the continuity of texts and of cultures. It also allows us to recall earlier texts to gain new insights and meanings relevant to the present time.
