VERBS Parts of speech

Verbs Verbs are words that express actions, events, or states of being. Example: "run," "jump," "think," "exist" In the realm of verbs, we find the vitality of actions like "run" and "jump," the contemplation of "think," and the mere existence captured in "exist." Each verb paints a vivid picture of movement, thought, or existence within the canvas of communication.

Action Verbs: These verbs express physical or mental action. Linking Verbs: They connect the subject of a sentence to a subject complement. Helping Verbs (Auxiliary Verbs): These verbs assist the main verb in expressing tense, mood, or voice. Types of Verbs

Types of Verbs Action verbs are the workhorses of language. They denote actions that can be seen, heard, felt, or experienced. 1.Action Verbs Examples: She runs every morning. They laughed loudly at the joke.

Linking verbs serve to connect the subject of a sentence to a subject complement. They do not show action but rather express a state of being or condition. Types of Verbs 2.Linking Verbs Examples: He seems happy. The cake smells delicious.

Types of Verbs Helping verbs work alongside main verbs to express various nuances such as tense, mood, or voice. 3.Helping Verbs Examples: She is singing beautifully. They have been waiting for hours.

TWO KINDS OF VERBS TRANSITIVE VERB INTRANSITIVE VERB

They require a direct object to complete their meaning. Transitive Verbs Transitive: She ate the cake. Nathaniel wrote a letter. Examples: An object of a sentence is the person or thing that receives the action of the verb You can figure out the direct object by using this question format: “The subject did what?” of “The subject [verb] what?”

Angel reads a novel. More examples: Caleb canceled the reservation. Melissa bought an expensive cake. The instructor addressed the question.

An intransitive verb does not require an object Intransitive Verbs The dog walked slowly. Examples: Using an object immediately after an intransitive verb will create an incorrect sentence. However, there may be other information after the verb, such as one or more prepositional phrases or an adverb.

The passenger arrived late. More examples: Marielle and Cedrick listened attentively. Leonardo is sleeping soundly.
