Why is there a need to study religion?

Religion has been in existence since the earliest time of humankind. Wherever humankind inhabits, religion too, exists .

In this chapter you will learn: The concepts related to religion. The origin of religion. Roles played by religion.

Chapter 1, Lesson 1: Understanding the Nature of Religion

Religion is an organized system of beliefs, ceremonies, and rules used to worship a god or a group of gods (Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 2014).

Religion is the pursuit of transformation guides by a sacred belief system (Ong & Jose, 2016).

Activity: I believe. In the context of religion, list down 3 things you believe in. (5 minutes )

Worldview is a collection of beliefs about life and the universe being held by people (The Free Dictionary, 2014).

Theism is a belief in the existence of God.

Monotheism is a belief in the existence of one God.

Polytheism is a belief in the existence of two or more gods.

Monism is a belief that all that exists are part of unified oneness.

Agnosticism is a belief that it’s impossible for sure to know if a god exists or not.

Atheism is a belief that there is no God.
