Breeding techniques for Cirrhinus reba Presented by – Joy Rawat 2nd year 4th sem. (BFSC) Course code – AQC - 222 COF,Dholi

Introduction - Cirrhinus reba is a commercially important freshwater minor carp . Commonly known as reba carp. C. reba vernacularly known as Bata/ Kharkebata / Reva in India . Maximum length of cirrhinus reba has been reported 60 cm by Hamilton (1822). Cirrhinus reba is widely distributed throughout India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Myanmar and Thailand . Cirrhinus reba is a bottom feeder. Its herbivorous feeding habit has been reported by most of the earlier researches.

Morphological characters - Slender shape body. More convex dorsal profile than ventral one . Mouth is terminal , snout is slightly projected. One pair of barbels. Cycloid and Hexagonal silver scales make shiny appearance . Caudal fin is Heterocercal.

Sexual Dimorphism - Male Female Male and female C. reba can be differentiated easily by observing the external sexual characters developed during breeding season. Scales anterior dorsal side are rough with sandy texture Dorsal side of pectoral fins at the base is rough, Pectoral fins are slightly longer. Abdomen elongated, introvert and whitish vent. Slight pressure on the abdomen vent milt oozes will come out. Size of sexual maturity is – 11.5 cm (TL) while in female scales are smooth. Dorsal side of pectoral fins at the base is smooth. While in female they are slightly smaller. Bulging abdomen with extrovert, fleshy, round and pinkish vent, Slight pressure on the abdomen eggs will come out. Size of sexual maturity is – 13.5 cm (TL).

Fecundity Cirrhinus reba has been reported as a high fecund fish, fecundity ranging from 22,356 to 4, 37,400 . Average fecundity is 40,000. The first attain maturity after one year and males/females weigh around 150-250 g at the peak breeding season of May-June. Males are of a smaller size than females and attain maturity faster. Female broodstock attain a size of 15.5-16 cm and weight 200-250 g male broodstock attain a size of 13-14.5 cm weight 90-120 g.

Breeding season - Long breeding season from April - October/Nov., Peak spawning June/July in Bangladesh. In south India spawning season starts from the end of may to end of October. April to early September, it breeding season in muzaffarnagar , Uttar Pradesh with spawning in July .

Broodstock management and breeding - For broodstock development, fingerlings are collected from the wild. The fingerlings should be reared for one year in the earthen ponds of 0.02 ha. A minimum water depth of 1.0-1.5 meters is maintained with frequent water exchange during the winter season. During the one-year rearing period, liming, and manuring should be done following the Standard - Lime 300 kg/ha of agricultural lime., Manuring 6,000 kg/ha of raw cow dung/poultry manure. The fish is fed with farm made formulated feed comprising soyabean meal, mustard oil cake, rice polish and vitamin and mineral mixture, or commercial feed with a crude protein content of 30-32%.  The feed mixtures (mash or moist feed) are kept in perforated fertilizer bags tied to bamboo poles.

The fish maturity attain after one year , Males are of a smaller size than females and attain maturity faster. Female broodstock attain a size of 15.5-16 cm and weight 200-250 g. Male broodstock attain a size of 13-14.5 cm weight 90-120 g. For the breeding , male and female fi h were taken in the ratio of 3:l . Prior to breeding male and female broodstock of C. reba   is kept in a separate breeding hapa at the spawning pool. Induced breeding should be carried out during evening hours at an air temperature of 24-25°C. Ovafish , a synthetic inducing agent is administered at the rate of 0.5 ml/kg body weight for females and 0.25 ml/kg body weight for males. males and females are released into the spawning pool after injection. After 7-8 hours eggs are released by the females and collected in the early morning. Eggs hatched after 24 hours of incubation at the carp hatchery. The hatchlings were 1.75-2.1 mm in length. Continued -

First used synthetic hormone ovaprime for captive breeding of cirrhinus reba . Ovaprime Female Male 0.5ml /kg of body weight 0.4ml/kg of body weight Doses of Pitutary extract Doses of Pitutary extract Female Male 1 st Dose – 2mg/kg of body weight 2 nd Dose – 5mg/kg of body weight Single Dose – 2mg/kg of body weight

Larval rearing - The hatchlings are 1.75-2.1 mm in length .and a prominent dark band can be observed . Approximately 0.6 million hatchlings are released into a nursery tank of 0.01 ha. All the better management practices of carp farming is followed during stocking of the spawn. The hatchlings fed on green algae , Fry of this species exclusively feed on the animalcules and water fleas. Fingerlings consume in the order of preference the vegetable debris, unicellular algae, detritus and mud. Young ones of this species are used to wonder around the column and the surface waters for feeding. Larval rearing
