2. 2 Folic acid F olic acid is a vitamin which is essential for proper growth and development of the fetus. FA prevent about 72% of the neural tube defects and congenital heart defects. In pregnant women it prevent anemia and decrease risk of pre-eclampsia.

3. 3 In all people folic acid may prevents atherosclerosis, stroke, Alzheimer ' s disease, assists in healthy hair and skin growth, also it is helpful in anxiety and depression treatment . Sources of folate divided to natural sources as green leafy vegetables, animal liver, meat, fish, and drugs .

4. Lack of folate intake during the early weeks of pregnancy increase the risk of development of neural tube defects. Neural tube defects are the second most common group of serious birth defects after cardiac abnormalities. 4

5. 5 Globally, NTDs incidences is 1 per 1000 births. Annually NTDs affect 323,904 babies and cause 88,000 deaths in the world and approximately 2.5 per 100.000 infants in Yemen.
