Introduction of Hematology M Ismail Bs MLT MS MLS
Myoglobin Myoglobin is a protein found in muscles, particularly in skeletal and cardiac muscle cells. It plays a crucial role in: 1)Oxygen storage and delivery: 2)Muscle function and exercise: 3)Muscle contraction: Myoglobin helps regulate muscle contraction force and velocity. Structure Structure and function: 1. Myoglobin is a globular protein consisting of 153 amino acids. 2. It contains a heme group, which binds oxygen.
Clinical Significance 1. Muscle damage: Elevated myoglobin levels indicate muscle damage (e.g., myocardial infarction, muscle trauma). 2. Renal failure: Myoglobinuria (myoglobin in urine) can cause kidney damage. 3. Hypoxia: Low myoglobin levels impair oxygen delivery to muscles. Normal values: - Serum myoglobin: 20-80 ng/mL - Urine myoglobin: <10 ng/mL
