Introduction The term NTFP was coined by De Beer and McDermott (1989). “Non-Timber Forest Products encompassed all biological materials other than timber, which are extracted from forests for human use .” (De Beer and McDermott, 1989). NTFPs have many definitions in the literature Thus, it is hardly to encounter single definition of NTFPs in the existing literatures ( Gary and Kristin, 2005). This is due to the fact that different individuals and/or organizations have modified the definition in different ways to suit their needs Prabin Pandit, PUCEF

Introduction According to Chandrasekharan(1995) “The NTFP means any biological resource, and any merchant service, except all forms of softwood lumber from the forest or other ecosystems with similar functions“ According to Mathurand Shiva (1996) “All products obtained from plants of forest origin and host plant species yielding products in association with insects and animals or their parts and items of mineral origin except timber, may be defined as Minor Forest Products (MFP) or Non-Wood Forest Products (NWFP) or Non-Timber Forest Products ( NTFP )”. Prabin Pandit, PUCEF

Introduction Ros-Tonen et al. (1995, 1998)define NTFPs as, “all tangible animal and plant products from the forest, other than industrial wood” In 1998, they slightly modified this definition to include “....all tangible animal and plant forest products other than industrial wood, coming from natural forests, including managed secondary forests and enriched forests.” According to Brockhoven (1996) Non-timber forest products are “…all biological materials other than timber, fuel wood and carbon which are extracted from natural forests for human use. This includes parts of individual plants, such as leaves, bark and latexes; or parts of the population life cycle, such as seeds, flowers, eggs, or entire plants and animals.” Prabin Pandit, PUCEF

Introduction According to Turgeon(2003), “NTFPs include all forest products other than timber traditionally used in the processing industry for timber or pulp”. This definition imply that various species of timber also provide NTFP CIFOR (2008) defines NTFPs as, NTFPs are any product or service other than timber that is produced in forests. The term includes fruits and nuts, vegetables, fish and game, medicinal plants, resins, essences and a large range of barks and fibres such as bamboo, rattans, and a host of other plants and grasses. Prabin Pandit, PUCEF

Introduction Forest Act, 2049 (1993) has not incorporated the definition of NTFPs. It defines forest product as : " Forest Products " means the following products which are contained or found in or brought from forests:- (1)Timber, firewood, charcoal, catechu, rosin, wood-oil, bark, lac, piplapipli (piper longum), or (2)Tree, plant, leave, stem, fruit, seed, flower, floss, root, rhizome, bark, gum resins, lac gum, wild herbs, vegetation and different parts or organs thereof, or (3)Boulder, soil, stone, pebble, sand, or (4)Bird, wild life and trophy thereof. Forest Rules, 2051 (1995)/2079 Terms like Herbs, and Other Forest Products have been used. Definition of NTFPs is not included. Prabin Pandit, PUCEF
