Basic Grammar Concepts: Parts of Speech. To start expanding your grammar knowledge, it's helpful to begin with an understanding of the eight traditional parts of speech that make up our sentences: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, interjections, and conjunctions.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES - Students will be able to identify nouns and pronouns in sentences. - Students will be able to classify nouns into different categories (common, proper, concrete, abstract, collective etc. - Students will be able to understand the different types of pronouns and their functions. - Students will be able to use nouns and pronouns correctly in their own writing.

ARE Y OU READY ? W H A T I S N O U N ?

Nouns are words that represent people, places, things, or ideas. They are the core building blocks of sentences, providing the subject or object of a verb.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF NOUN : 1.Common Nouns: A re words that refer to general, non-specific people, places, or things. They are not capitalized unless they are the first word of a sentence. - The student is reading a book.

2 .Proper Nouns :are specific names of people, places, or things. They are always capitalized, no matter where they appear in a sentence. - John went to New York City for a vacation. 3.Concrete Nouns: are nouns that represent physical objects that can be seen, touched, heard, smelled, or tasted. These nouns refer to things that have a physical existence and can be identified through the five senses. -Table, Dog, Car, Book, Tree

4.Abstract Nouns: Denotes something intangible, such as a concept, quality, or state. -Love, Happiness, Freedom, Justice, Courage 5.Collective Nouns are words that represent a group of people, animals, or things. They act as a single of multiple individuals . -Circle of friends or communities

7.Plural Nouns are nouns that represent more than one person, animal, place, thing, or idea. They are used when talking about multiple entities or individuals. -children, windows etc, 6.Singular Noun are nouns that represent one person, animal, place, thing, or idea. They are used when talking about a single entity or individual. -chair, dog, house, car, book

8.Compound nouns are words that are formed by combining two or more words. These words can be joined together in various ways, creating new nouns with unique meanings. 9.Countable Nouns are nouns that can be counted and have both singular and plural forms. These nouns can be used with numbers (one, two, three, etc.) and quantifiers (some, many, a few, etc.) to indicate specific quantities.

10.Uncountable Nouns are nouns that cannot be counted individually. These nouns represent concepts, substances, or qualities that are considered as a whole and cannot be divided into separate units. They do not have a plural form and are always used in the singular.

PRONOUN: Are words that used to subtitute for nouns when your reader or listener already knows which noun you’re reffering to. -such as, I, she, he, you, it, we, or they

DIFFERENT TYPES OF PRONOUN 1.Personal Pronoun are words used to replace nouns to avoid repetition and make sentences clearer and less repetitive. - first person, second person , third perso n

2.Possessive Pronoun are words that show ownership or possession. They replace possessive nouns and indicate who or what something belongs to. 3.Reflexive Pronoun are pronouns that are used when the subject and the object of a sentence are the same person or thing. They reflect the action back onto the subject. Reflexive pronouns end in "-self" in the singular form and "-selves" in the plural form.

4.Demonstrative Pronouns are words that point to specific people, places, or things. They indicate which person, place, or thing is being referred to. 5.Interrogative pronouns are words used to ask questions. They introduce questions and help to determine the specific information being sought.

6.Relative Pronoun are words that connect a dependent clause (a clause that cannot stand alone) to a main clause. They introduce relative clauses and provide additional information about a noun or pronoun in the main clause.

F u n c t i o n o f N o u n a n d P r o n o u n - Nouns: The main subjects or objects of a sentence. They provide the core meaning and identify the entities involved. - Pronouns: Replace nouns to make writing more concise and avoid redundancy. They maintain the clarity of the sentence without repeating the same noun multiple times.

THE USAG E OF NOU N AN D PR O N O U N - Nouns: Used whenever you want to specifically name a person, place, thing, or idea. - Pronouns: Used to refer back to nouns already mentioned in the sentence or context.
