Introduction to Civil Engineering Course Instructor : Mr. Ashish Katiyar
ENGINEERING Ingenious means “Clever Person” in Latin. Engineers cleverly uses the available natural resources for the benefit of mankind. Provides comfort to mankind and makes life comfortable. Application of scientific and mathematical knowledge and rational thinking to improve living standards
Civil Engineering Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including public works such as roads, bridges, canals, dams, airports, sewage systems, pipelines, structural components of buildings, and railways.
Components of Residential Building 1. Foundation 2. Plinth 3. Walls and columns 4. Sills, lintels and chejjas 5. Doors and windows 6. Floors 7. Roofs 8. Steps, stairs and lifts 9. Finishing work 11. Parapet
INDUSTRIAL BUILDING Any building structure used by the industry to s tore raw materials or for manufacturing products of the industry is known as an industrial building. Industrial buildings are generally used for steel plants, automobile industries, utility and process industries, thermal power stations, warehouse, assembly plants, storage, garages , etc.
Factors Considered while Selecting Site For Industrial Building:- Site should be located on an arterial road. Local availability of raw material. Facilities like water supply, electricity Topography of an area Soil conditions with respect to foundation design Waste disposal facilities Transportation facilities Sufficient space for storage of raw materials
Types of Industrial Building 1. Warehouses 2. Cold Storage Buildings 3. Telecom Centres or Data Hosting Centres 4. Flex Buildings 5. Light Manufacturing Buildings 6. Research And Development Set up 1. Warehouse There are buildings that are used for storing goods on behalf of other companies . These are called warehouses. They can have more than one storey and can have loading docks, huge parking lots of big trucks
2. Cold Storage Buildings - Refrigeration and cold storage facilities are distribution centers dedicated to food items like meat, produce, and dairy. Other key features include docks with special seals to keep products cool, as well as insulated overhead doors that keep them frozen. 3. Telecom/Data Hosting Centers (Switching Centers, Cyber Centers, Web Hosting Facilities, Telecom Centers ) C ommunications trunk lines to allow for access to an extremely large and redundant power supply capable of powering extensive computer servers
4. FLEX BUILDING:- This is the newest addition to the category of industrial segment of industrial real estate and is a result of the evolving needs of modern times. These flex building have more than one usage and can accommodate R and D facility , an office set up, light manufacturing and even showroom spaces.
5. LIGHT MANUFACTURING BUILDING :- These buildings can be used in processing food items or assembly of light machinery like fans, water pumps, gadgets, etc. These are generally small in size as compared to heavy industrial buildings and do not have blast furnace, high capacity exhaust systems etc.
6. RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT BUILDING:- Research and Development (R&D) forms an integral part of many businesses and they like to set up their own R&D centres which cater to their specific requirements. 7. SHOWROOM BUILDINGS:- A showroom is a large space used to display products for sale, such as automobiles, furniture, appliances, carpet or apparel.
Branches of Civil Engineering
JOBS OF CIVIL ENGINEER Designing infrastructure Design and supervise the process of construction and maintenance of infrastructure. Responsible for developing structures that are a need of any society, for example, railways, roads, airports, harbors, bridges, irrigation projects, water and sewage systems, power plants . Civil engineers have 2 categories- consulting engineers and contracting engineers Consulting Engineers: Consultants are required to create the design of projects. Contacting Engineers: Contractors are required to look over the designs and implement them throughout construction.
Skills of a Civil Engineer Firm understanding of government and industry standards, objective and requirements,. Civil engineer should possess great leadership, decision forming, and analytical thinking traits. Excellent communication skills and technical writing is also essential.
Career options in Civil Engineering Builder Engineer: These experts provide maintenance and repair services for workplaces, apartment buildings, and health care facilities. Construction estimate : do you have to figure out the factors that affect the production duration cost of the project workforce and materials availability . Design engineers : design engineers join hands with research and development teams to evolve design parameters and reach requirement . They use CAD or CAE software to develop model and plants . Environmental engineer : they are the engineers who utilise knowledge like engineering , studies of soil science , and biology to acquire environmental solutions . Environmental engineers analyse and prepare the investigative reports . From designing projects to provide solutions to simplify issues s uch as waste disposal , recycling water add air pollution control is the core job .
Scope of Civil Engineering Civil engineers discuss real world challenges and work on dynamic technical developments . They work related to designing , construction and engineering and c reate an impact on the construction technologies . It is important to assess the scope of a field before pursuing a career in that direction , here is all the information you need on the scope of civil engineering . There is a massive career scope in civil engineering as civil engineering graduates can explorer promising opportunities in both the private sector and public sector .
