Introduction to fundamental concepts of a Clinical audit and Quality Improvement Project Speaker: Dr. Faizan Fazal
What is a Clinical audit and Quality Improvement Project (Qip)
Difference between a Clinical audit and Quality Improvement Project (Qip)
Choosing between Clinical audit and a Quality Improvement Project (Qip)
Choosing between Clinical audit and a Quality Improvement Project (Qip) Qip is superior to an audit and is more acceptable in international journals and for CV purposes if you plan to go for foreign exams, etc.
How to do a Qip
Parts of a Qip
Parts of a Qip Identification of topic/subject to be investigated. Look for any room for improvement in the healthcare setting. Look if the national or international guidelines are being followed. Look if the patient care is being compromised. Look if the infection prevention protocols are not being followed.
Parts of a Qip Initial audit (1 st audit cycle) After you have identified a potential topic, plan to carry out an initial audit. This will be called the 1 st audit cycle. Ask permission from the relevant department, Construct a questionnaire, and conduct the audit.
Parts of a Qip Assessing the results of the initial audit to reveal aspects for improvement. Analyse the results you have achieved from the initial audit (1 st cycle). Properly document these results as you may have to produce these results when writing your final article.
Parts of a Qip Implementation/Intervention of changes. After you have analysed the results of the initial audit cycle, and you have identified the potential areas for improvement, plan an intervention. The intervention may be in the form of an educational awareness session for the department.
Parts of a Qip Re-audit (2 nd audit cycle) to assess the effect of that intervention. After carrying out your planned intervention, do a Re-audit (2 nd audit cycle). The purpose of the Re-audit (2 nd audit cycle) is to assess if the intervention had any effect or not.
