Slide Content

Water Resources Engineering – II (CE 604) Asst. Prof. Ujjwal Saha Department of Civil Engineering IIEST , Shibpur

Objective of this Course To introduce the students the basic concepts of water requirements of crops and irrigation water requirement and basic ideas of irrigation and drainage systems design, planning and management. After completion of this course one should be able to design an irrigation project which includes water requirements, canal design and hydraulic structures for irrigation project.

Syllabus Irrigation: Necessity, Types, Techniques, Quality of Irrigation water, Soil-water-plant relationship, Water requirement of crops, Base period, Duty, Delta, Commanded area, Intensity of irrigation, Consumptive use of water, Other terms related to water requirement of crops, Irrigation efficiencies, Frequency of irrigation. Water Storage: Flow mass curve, estimation of storage required for irrigation and other demands.

Canal irrigation : Classification of canals, canals in alluvium, design of unlined canals: Kennedy's method, Lacey's method, lined canals: advantages, materials used, typical sections, design of lined canals, and economics of canal lining. Land drainage: Design and maintenance of open drains, closed drains, discharge and spacing of closed drains.

Diversion headwork : Necessity and uses, different types, Layout and different components, weirs on permeable foundation, Creep theories, Khosla's method, different types of modules, canal escapes, Silt control devices. Canal structures : Head- regulators, Cross-regulators, falls.
