INTRODUCTION TO PHONETICS

LANGUAGE ‘Language is not an abstract construction of the learned, or of dictionary-makers, but is something arising out of work, needs, ties, joys, affections, tastes, of long generations of humanity, and has its bases broad and low, close to the ground.’ Walt Whitman.

LINGUISTIC linguistic competence ; what you know linguistic performance ; how you use this knowledge in actual speech production and comprehension The linguistic knowledge is, for the most part, not conscious knowledge. The linguistic system – the sounds, structures, meanings, words, and rules for putting them all together – is learned subconsciously with no awareness that rules are being learned.

LINGUISTICS Linguistics provides a theoretical basis for practical applications that includes the diagnosis and treatment of language

PHONETICS AND SOUND SYSTEM IN ENGLISH When we speak or understand someone speaking a language we know, the sounds produced or heard are related to specific meanings by the language system. When we hear a language we do not know, it sounds like gibberish. As mentioned earlier, we do not know where one word ends and another begins.

Knowing a language means knowing the meaning of the sounds which represent morphemes, words, phrases, sentences and also what sounds are in the language and how they may be strung together to form these meaningful units. The study of the speech sounds that occur in all human languages to represent meanings is called phonetics.

A. PHONETIC SYMBOLS FOR ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION   A phonetic alphabet should include enough symbols to represent linguistic differences. A list of phonetic symbols which can be used to represent speech sounds of English is given in the table below.
