Introduction to Research Definition Aims Types

“No research without action, no action without research” -Kurt Lewin , German-American Psychologist

KNOWING THE TOPIC Research involves a purposive, organized, and planned program of activities that result in the acquisition of knowledge. From its root word “search” and the prefix “re”, research can be defined as a repetitive search for something previously unknown.

AIMS OF RESEARCH The aims of research are to (1) generate new knowledge or information; (2) find an application for the new knowledge; (3) verify existing knowledge; and (4) develop the investigator.

(1) generate new knowledge or information The new knowledge or information that researchers obtain in various disciplines contributes to the growth of science.

(2) find an application for the new knowledge Applying of knowledge also constitute new information.

(3) verify existing knowledge Researchers are also conducted using more advanced detection and measuring devices to verify previous facts or findings.

(4) develop the investigator When you do research, your independent study provides an opportunity for creativity and for making original contributions to scientific knowledge.

TYPES OF RESEARCH *determined by the aims of the researcher. Basic Research is conducted solely to come up with new knowledge or to have a fuller understanding of a particular subject for its own sake.

TYPES OF RESEARCH *determined by the aims of the researcher. Applied Research is done to find an applications of the knowledge whether new or old.

TYPES OF RESEARCH * classified by the condition under which the study is done. Descriptive Research is done by observing and recording the changes as they happen in nature.

TYPES OF RESEARCH * classified by the condition under which the study is done. Experimental Research is done if there is/are factor/s that interfere with what nature provides.

Research is similar to studying except that in this endeavour, you will have to do the actual research to find the answers to your problems. With your partner, recall the aims of research and relate them to your personal goal as a researcher. Make a short interview with your partner and share it to class.

What is research, its aims and types? Why research is important for students? How does research improve the quality of our lives?
