TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED IN WOODWORKING
Basic woodworking techniques (CUTTING)
1. Types of Saws Hand Saw A manual saw used for straight cuts. It's useful for smaller projects. Miter Saw Perfect for making precise crosscuts and angled cuts. Table Saw A versatile power tool for straight cuts, rip cuts, and more.
Circular Saw A portable saw for making straight cuts in larger pieces of wood. Jigsaw Ideal for making curved cuts and intricate shapes in wood. Band Saw Used for cutting curves and resawing lumber into thinner pieces.
2. Cutting Techniques Measuring and Marking a. Always measure accurately using a tape measure or ruler. b. Mark the cut line with a pencil or a marking knife for precision. Making Straight Cuts a. Use a straight edge (like a ruler or a level) as a guide for your saw. b. Clamp the wood securely before cutting to prevent movement.
Cross-Cutting This is cutting across the grain of the wood. Use a miter saw or hand saw for clean cuts. Ripping This involves cutting with the grain. Use a table saw for better control and precision. Curved Cuts A jigsaw or band saw is best for cutting curves. Follow the marked line slowly and steadily.
SAFETY TIPS IN CUTTING WOODS
Always wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from sawdust and debris. Keep your fingers clear of the blade's path and use push sticks or guides when necessary. Ensure your workspace is tidy and free of obstacles to prevent tripping.
