INTRODUCTION
•Pharmaceutically, inventory refers to a stock of drugs and drug
items.
•Inventory management refers to the activity of forecasting
demands, ordering and managing stock at hand.
•The focus is when to order (time), how much to order (Quantity)
and from whom to order (supplier).

OBJECTIVES
•Pharmaceutical products require adequate attention as they may
compose up to 40% of the healthcare budget. Thus there must be an
adequate management of the flow of medicines.
•Effective inventory management is crucial in pharmacy stores to
✓ensure optimal stock levels,
✓minimize loss and
✓ provide uninterrupted access to essential medications and healthcare
products.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
1. RATE OF CONSUMPTION
The average quantity of commodities dispensed to users during a particular time
period.
2. AVERAGE MONTHLY CONSUMPTION (AMC)
The measure of how much stock is used in an average month over a specific period.
3. STOCK ON HAND
Quantities of usable stock available at any level or at all levels of the system at a point
in time.

4. MINIMUM ORDER QUANTITY
The minimum quantity of a drug item to be stocked at every point in time.

5. MAXIMUM ORDER QUANTITY
The maximum quantity of a drug item to be stocked at very point in time.
Max. O. Q = A.M.C x 4
INVENTORY CLASSIFICATION
A.The SDE Analysis (Scare, Difficult, Easy) : Based on Market availability.
B. The ABC Analysis (Always, Better, Control) : Based on value of revenue generated.
C. The VED Analysis (Vital, Essential and Desirable) : Based on how essential the drug item is.
D. The FSN Analysis (Based on consumption rate)
1. Fast moving drugs: Commonly prescribed medications/drug items.
2. Slow moving drugs: Not commonly prescribed medications/drug items.
3. Non- moving drugs: Discontinued medications/ drug items.
E. The MCD Analysis (Multi Criteria Decision): Considers more than one criterion.
