BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY In recent years, a great deal of study has been done on the complicated and multifaceted problem of how smartphone use affects teenagers' academic performance. While other studies have revealed that using a smartphone can really improve academic achievement, some have concluded that it can also have a negative impact. Others have discovered no affect at all, at all. One of the most popular worries regarding smartphone use is that it can encourage multitasking and distraction. There is a lower likelihood that pupils will pay attention to the teacher and the material when they are using their smartphones in class. Furthermore, because it is challenging for pupils to concentrate on one topic at a time, multitasking might hinder learning.

OBJECTIVES: To Examine the psychological effects of smartphone use, including addiction, tension, and anxiety, and how these could affect a student's ability to succeed in school. To Analyze the relationship between academic success and adolescent self-control with reference to smartphone use.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION The study will concentrate on a particular group of teenagers aged 13–18 who are only enrolled at Jiabong National High School for the school year 2023–2024 to gather information about the impact of the use of smartphones on teenagers' academic performance.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM What types of smartphone activities do teenagers in Jiabong National High School engage in most often? What types of interventions would be most effective in helping teenagers use their smartphones in a way that is beneficial for their academic success? SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY This study will be undertaken to find out and determine the impact of the usage of the smartphone on students in Jiabong National High School so that it can help to Raise awareness of the potential negative impact of smartphone use on academic performance and to Understand the factors that mediate or moderate the relationship between smartphone use and academic performance.
