Introduction Common Name:: Mango Fruitfly Scientific Name :: Bactrocera Dorsalis Family :: Tephritidae Order :: Diptera Damaging Stage :: Maggots
LIFE CYCLE OF MANGO FRUIT FLY
DAMAGING SYMPTOMS The maggots destroy and convert the pulp into a bad smelling, discoloured semi liquid mass unfit for human consumption. The Infestation result in fruit drop and start rotting from inside. One complete rotting of the fruits the damage fruits develop yellow spot with black centres through which liquid ooze out of pressing.
Management of Mango Fruit Fly Cultural Practices Collect fallen infested rotten fruits. Destroy these collected fruits by dumping in a pit (40-60cm deep) and cover with soil to eliminate all possible breeding sites. Harvest crop early when mature green. As this stage of fruit maturity crops are not susceptible to fruit fly attack. Plough the topsoil (5-10cm deep) to expose the pupae to direct sunlight.
Physical Barrier Bag the mango fruits with fine mesh nets or covers to create physical barrier, preventing fruit flies from infesting the fruits. Mechanical Measures Set up fly trap using methyl eugenol . Prepare methyl eugenol 1 ml/ 1 litre of water + dimethoate 30 EC 1 ml solution Take 10 ml of this mixture per trap and keep them at 25 different places in one ha between 6 and 8 am. Collect and destroy the adult flies.
Protein Hydrolahsote -- 110g Sugar/ Jaggary -- 20g Malathion 50 EC -- 10g Water -- 5 lit. Biological Measures Parasitiods ---Like optimus campenstes and Splangia philippinensis lay their egg inside the fruit fly larvae killing them. Predators--- Certain insects such as spiders and ants prey on fruit fly larvae and pupae.. Poison bait
