The First Murder Genesis Chapter 4, Part 5

When? Post Garden of Eden No exact time frame Somewhere between 1- and 130 year(Adam was 130 years old when Seth was born

Characters Cain - Eldest son of Adam and Eve. He was the earth's first murderer. Abel - Second son of Adam and Eve. He was murdered by his brother Cain. The Family of Adam and Eve - Chapter 4 concludes with a genealogy of the growing population of the earth. Several key characters are mentioned in the outline.

Where? Adam and Eve were removed from the Garden of Eden in chapter 3. We aren't told exactly where they settled following their eviction, but this chapter picks up in that location. Chapter 4 tells us Cain's family settled "east of Eden" in the land of Nod after God banished him for killing his brother. Keep in mind, this chapter covers 1000+ years of history. Adam and Eve's family probably spread to many locations as their numbers multiplied and the years progressed.

THE STORY OF CAIN AND ABEL (4:1-8): Adam and Eve had two sons whose names were Cain and Abel. The First born male Cain meaning Smith, Spear[-Bearer], Political Leader, With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man

Abel The second born Abel meaning The verb הבל (habal), means to act emptily or become vain, and the noun הבל (hebel) means vapor, breath, or something very close to nothing. The famous saying "vanity of vanities; all is vanity" (Ecclesiastes 1:2) uses these words.

Cain was a farmer and Abel was a keeper of sheep. Cain Genesis‬ ‭2‬:‭15‬ ‭NIV‬‬ “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” Abel Genesis‬ ‭1‬:‭24‬ ‭NIV‬‬ “And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so.”

Both brothers prepared a sacrificial offering to make to the Lord. Genesis‬ ‭4‬:‭3‬-‭4‬ ‭NIV‬‬ “In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock.

God was pleased with Abel’s offering but disapproved of Cain's. “ Genesis‬ ‭4‬:‭4‬-‭5‬ ‭NIV‬‬ The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.”

Why did God not look with favor on Cain’s offering? Possibly the type of offering At this time the Bible doesn’t specify such sacrifices had been commanded by God. This could be an spontaneous or an thanksgiving or possibly a worship offering. It could have been God had given clear instructions that were disobeyed

There is no verse that states God rejec the offering because it was not an first born animal offering Also nothing states that he was presenting a sin offering

Possible the quality of the offering? Was it rejected because it was poor quality Was it rejected because it was not of the first gathered““  Leviticus‬ ‭2‬:‭14‬ ‭NIV‬‬ ‘If you bring a grain offering of firstfruits to the Lord, offer crushed heads of new grain roasted in the fire.” Significance of the fat? Leviticus 3:9, 16; 4:19-20, 25-26

Possibly the heart of the offerer? The New Testament gives more reason for Cain’s offering rejection Hebrews‬ ‭11‬:‭4‬ ‭NIV‬‬ “By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead.” ‭‭

Cain‘s Heart

1 John 3:11-12 “For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous.”

1 John 3:13-15 “Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters, if the world hates you. We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.”

Abel’s offering was looked on with favor by God The Bible tells us that Cain’s works were evil The Bible shows use that evil works preceded the murder Genesis‬ ‭4‬:‭7‬ ‭NIV‬‬ “If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.””

Cain’s Defiance When God convicted him Cain was defiant Genesis‬ ‭4‬:‭5‬-‭7‬ ‭NIV‬‬ “but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.””

God provided a way out Cain’s possible pride and stubbornness allowed sin to rule over him This led him to commit the first murder (Genesis 4:8) For us our thought and feeling can destroy our life’s just like Cain

Ultamate answer on Gods rejection of Cain’s offering? We don’t absolutely know that God required a blood sacrifice of Cain In the case of offering, giver the first fruits of our labor with a cheerful heart Also understand that works by themselves do not save us Also to cheerfully accept instruction, correction, and even rebuke from the Lord God

GOD CURSES CAIN FOR MURDERING HIS BROTHER (4:9-15):

God approached Cain and asked him where his brother had gone. Cain replied with the famous words, ““I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?””(Genesis‬ ‭4‬:‭9‬ ‭NIV‬‬) But God knew what Cain had done and He placed a curse on him as punishment.

Because he had spilled his brother’s blood on the earth, the earth would no longer produce a harvest for him. Cain could no longer be a farmer, instead he would wander as a “fugitive” on the earth. Imagine the best skill that you have be taken from you for the rest of your life.

Cain protested the harshness of his punishment. He was concerned other men would kill him when they found out who he was. Then the Lord put a “ mark ” on Cain so that “ no one who found him would kill him .”‭‭Genesis‬ ‭4‬:‭15‬ ‭NIV‬‬

THE HUMAN RACE EXPANDS (4:16-26):

The rest of chapter 4 contains a genealogy of the growing family of Adam and Eve. Cain settled in the land of Nod (east of Eden) Had a son named Enoch, with his wife/sister Cain built a city and named it after his son Enoch

Cain’s great-great-grandson, Lamech, is the first man recorded to have married 2 wives. He also claimed to have killed another man for striking him. Lamech had three sons who specialized in three crafts. Jabal worked with livestock, Jubal played the lyre and pipe, and Tubal-cain was a forger of bronze and iron.

Adam and Eve had another son named Seth. The text tells us around this time, “people began to call upon the name of the Lord.” Cain’s descendants leaned to “evil” and Seth’s descendants exspressed their “dependence” on God
