. Need for consumer protection act in era of free competition where consumer is a king. Therefore king needs protection.

INTRODUCTION- Consumer Protection Act, 1986. After finding a low level of consumer rights among public, Govt. of India started a national level-media awareness campaign, Jago Grahak Jago , in 2005. The slogan ‘ Jago Grahak Jago ’ has now become a household name as a result of the publicity campaign undertaken in the last 12 year.

RIGHTS OF CONSUMER- Right to Safety. Right to information. Right to Choose. Right to be heard. Right to Seek Redressal . Right to Consumer Education.

DUTIES OF CONSUMER- Examination of expiry date. Checking of M.R.P before buying. Checking of quality mark on the products. See the warranty and guaranty terms. Check net quantity in the package. Check the name of the goods. Ask for bill.

.

OBJECTIVES-   1 . To protect the consumer against the promotion and selling of products and services which are dangerous to life and property of individuals. 2 . Every consumer must be properly informed and educated on the price, standard, purity, potency, quantity and quality of the products so that the consumers are protected against the unfair and unethical trade practices. 3 . Every consumer should have right to be assured. Where ever there is possibility of access to different products at competitive rates, the consumer should be given access to. 4 . Every consumer must have right to be heard at different forums. 5 . The consumer should have his right to look for justice and redress against any unethical or unfair trade practice which aims to exploit the consumer.

EFFECTS- Overall, the results of the study found that Jago Grahak Jago media campaign is useful to increase the level of the consumer awareness. Though, there is no satisfactory behavioural and attitudinal change in their buying habits. The study supports the past studies that there is a great need to do something more to change the behaviour of consumers. Public awareness on the rights of consumers has become necessary because it is taken as an indicator of the progress of a country. Realizing that more than 70% population under the age of 35 years is using the internet in a big way, a major initiative is being taken to spread consumer awareness through the internet. While communication campaign has been effective in increasing awareness among the people but there is least evidence of the effectiveness of changing the behaviour and attitude of everybody in a low and middle income country.
