An American Developmental Psychologist who has tried to bring Piaget’ s theory in the context of the American. Bruner does not support the idea the children leave one stage of thinking behind to start another level of thinking and reasoning. Irrespective of our age and phase of development, we need too learn through sensing and handling objects. Jerome Bruner

His theory of cognitive development is not divided into stages. Him like Vygotsky believed that we learn and improve our knowledge throughout the entire life. He speaks about modes of learning then stages of cognitive development Jerome Bruner

Enactive mode We all learn through our action and manipulating objects in our environment . We act on the basis of our thoughts Our level of thinking can be concluded from our actions. Our learning is motoric or action based. Hand on experiences Enactive mode of learning correspond with Basic Concept in his theory

Piaget’s sensory motor stage that we all learn through our senses and actions. Touching, tasting, smelling, feeling, role play or drama do not only benefit the children who are at the infancy stage. There are some topics in which we as adult also need to learn this way When the infant does not possess sufficient language and picture of how the world looks like, the only means of learning is holding objects and see what they can do Jerome Bruner

Bruner went ahead to state that learning to drive a car, typing, playing a piano or any practical skill can require adult to use the enactive mode of learning A person can be older but still use the mode of other phases of human development. He feel it is not important to attach ages to these modes of learning Physical Education, Arts and other practical subjects might need more enactive mode as compared to other subjects. Enactive mode

This mode came as a result of the child’s ability to remember object that they have previously met in and outside the schools. Concepts and principles that cannot be touched or demonstrated. Teachers must create images, pictures, diagrams or any other means that aids children to have the image of what it is all about Iconic thinking can be promoted through the use of the use of slides, videos. Iconic mode

Like in Piaget where formal operational thinking marked the highest level of thinking, the symbolic mode of thinking is the highest form of thinking in Bruner’s theory The child has now mastered the language and this helps him or her to express his ideas or what he thinks in words The mode is called symbolic to indicate that the person has now a good command of English Symbolic mode of thinking

The language become now a vehicle to express his thoughts The child can gather a wide range of information through reading. They are able to evaluate the validity and consistency of the information as they read Symbolic mode of thinking
