VERTEBRATES JAYSON J. NALICAT

Vertebrates are organisms which have an internal backbone surrounded by bone, also called vertebrae.

The word  vertebrate  derives from the  Latin  word  vertebratus   ( Pliny ), meaning  joint of the spine

Vertebrates represent the overwhelming majority of the  phylum   Chordata , with currently about 69,963  species  described.

All vertebrates are built along the basic chordate  body plan : a stiff rod running through the length of the animal (vertebral column and/or  notochord ),with a hollow tube of nervous tissue (the  spinal cord ) above it and the  gastrointestinal tract  below.

Subphylum Vertebrata Class  Agnatha  (jawless fishes) Class  Chondrichthyes  (cartilaginous fishes) Class  Osteichthyes  (bony fishes) Class  Amphibia  (amphibians) Class  Reptilia  (reptiles) Class  Aves  (birds) Class  Mammalia  (mammals)

Mammals  - Mammals have warm blood and usually have hair or fur on their bodies.

A  mammal  (from  Latin   mamma  'breast ') is a  vertebrate  animal of the  class   Mammalia

Mammals are characterized by the presence of milk-producing  mammary glands  for feeding their young, a  neocortex  region of the brain,  fur  or  hair , and three  middle ear bones .

Around 6,400  extant   species  of mammals have been described and divided into 29  orders .

The largest orders of mammals, by number of species, are the  rodents ,  bats , and  Eulipotyphla

most of the species in this order have  long, pointed snouts; lots of sharp teeth; small ears; and small eyes .

The next three are the  Primates

the  even-toed ungulates

What are even-toed ungulates called? artiodactyl artiodactyl , any member of the mammalian order Artiodactyla , or even-toed ungulates, which includes pigs, peccaries, hippopotamuses, camels, chevrotains, deer, giraffes, pronghorn, antelopes, sheep, goats, and cattle.

and the  Carnivora

carnivore, any member of the mammalian order Carnivora (literally, “flesh devourers” in Latin), comprising more than 270 species.
