JOHARI window and 4 types of personality with their characteristics Human resource management and organisational behaviour. Guided by Prof. S.W.Deshpande PRESENTED BY, Nikhil More

Johari window A Johari window is a psychological tool created by Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham in 1955. The  Johari window is a technique that helps people better understand their relationship with themselves and others. It is used primarily in self-help groups and corporate settings as a heuristic exercise. It’s a great model to use because of its simplicity and also because it can be applied in a variety of situations and environments.

Understanding the Johari window

Four different q uadrants of Johari window First quadrant is anything you know about yourself and are willing to share is part of your open area.Individuals can build trust between themselves by disclosing information to others and learning about others from the information they in turn disclose about themselves . Second quadrant is any aspect that you do not know about yourself, but others within the group have become aware of, is in your blind area. With the help of feedback from others you can become aware of some of your positive and negative traits as perceived by others and overcome some of the personal issues that may be inhibiting your personal or group dynamics within the team . Third quadrant includes aspects about yourself that you are aware of but might not want others to know, this quadrant is known as your hidden area. Something that you want to keep it as a secret.

Continued… Last one is fourth quadrant and it is the area that is unknown to you or anyone else,it is called unkown area. The balance between the four quadrants can change. You might want to tell someone an aspect of your life that you had previously kept hidden. This would increase your open area and decrease your hidden area . It is also possible to increase your open area by asking for feedback from people. When feedback is given honestly to you it can reduce the size of your blind area. The Self Awareness Diagnostic is a great accompaniment to the Johari window model and thus helps in u nderstaning your strenghs and weakness.

Simple example of Johari window

Drawbacks of Johari window Some things are perhaps better not communicated with others. People may pass on the information they received further than you desire or use it in a negative way. Some people or cultures have a very open and accepting approach to feedback and some do not. People can take personal feedback offensively so it’s important when facilitating to exercise caution and start gradually.

Four types of personalities 1. Type A personality – Know about self Mechanical and self centered. 2. Type B personality – Taking feedback and avoid exposing Relationships ends.

Continued.. 3. Type C personality- 80% confident of own reviews and lacks consideration of others. 4. Type D personality – People are open and sensitive to other needs Effective interpersonal behavior.

Four parts of the Personality

On the basis of interaction with world Intovert - If you prefer to direct your energy to deal with ideas, information, explanation or belief then your preference is for Introversion . Extrovert- The first pair of styles is concerned with the direction of your energy. If you prefer to direct your energy to deal with people to deal with people, things, situations or the outer world, then your preference is for Extraversion.

Absorption of information Sensing- The second pair concerns the type of information/ things that you process. If you prefer to deal with facts what you know to have clarity or to describe what you see, then your preference is for Sensing. Intuitive- If you prefer to deal with ideas, look into the unknown to generate new possibilities or to anticipate what is not obvious, then your preference is for Intuition.

On the basis decision making Thinking- The third pair reflects your style of decision-making. If you prefer to decide on the basis of objective logic using an analytic and detached approach, then your preference is for Thinking. Feeling- If you prefer to decide using values i.e. on the basis of what or who you believe is important then your preference is for Feeling.

On the Basis of organisation Judging- The final pair describes the type of life style you adopt. If you prefer your life to be planned, stable and organizes then your preference is for judging( not to be confused with judgmental which is quite different). Perceiving- If you prefer to go with the flow, to maintain flexibility and respond to things as they arise, then your preference is for Perception.

Conclusion Thus we had studied Johari window one of the few tools out there that has an emphasis on “soft skills” such as behaviour, empathy, co-operation, inter group development and interpersonal development. We had also seen the different types of personalities and how different people behave in a different way.
