After the COVID-19 pandemic, the education sector was struck with several challenges. These include a
decrease in the number of teachers who remain in the profession and feel motivated. Remote learning and
hybrid teaching models have made it difficult for educators to navigate these circumstances. Consequently,
students are finding it more challenging to stay engaged, which is impacting their ability to think critically.
However, the problems have not stopped some education leaders. These dedicated leaders have found new
ways to help fix the gaps in education made worse by the pandemic.
Katie Trowbridge, President and CEO at Curiosity 2 CREATE, is a prime example of a leader in the
education sector committed to delivering impactful work and encouraging innovation. She possesses the skills
essential to leading a nonprofit organization and offers specialized services to her students and other educators.
Her initiative arises from a passion for improving learning experiences and preparing students for the future.

Tracing the Early Years
Katie began working in the education
sector after having success in marketing.
One day, as Katie sat at her desk reading
a company mission statement, she
started to rethink her own life's purpose.
Reflecting on her passion for working
with teenagers, she co-founded the non-

students’ social-emotional needs.
Eventually, she switched to teaching and
committed to earning a Master's Degree
in Teaching while working full-time and
raising her family. After student
teaching at Naperville North High
School, Katie continued her teaching
career at NNHS, making room 246 a
special place for students while
participating in multiple district
committees.
In 2015, she took a yearlong sabbatical
from teaching and worked with the
Driskill Foundation and as Director of
Education. During this break, she
worked with Chicago Public Schools,
the Museum of Science and Industry,
and other education entities. After
returning to the classroom for ten years,
she was asked to return to the Driskill
Foundation as President and CEO of a
new non-profit called Curiosity 2
CREATE.
Katie is well-versed in creating and
teaching courses to help teachers infuse
their curriculum with deeper thinking
skills, collaboration, and
communication, ultimately resulting in
engagement and greater gains in
learning. She shows educators relevant

classroom, Katie found that creative
and critical thinning is not only for
students but also for teachers. Inspired
by IBM (2010), World Economic
Forum (2016), and LinkedIn (2019
and 2020), she wants to make sure
students are prepared for the future.
With a grant from The Driskill
Foundation, Katie and her team are
working to make schools a place
where students strive to think for
themselves, embrace their innate
creativity, and work together to find
innovative solutions to future
problems.
Tailored Solutions
Curiosity 2 CREATE focuses on
helping school districts improve
teachers' training and learning
experience. It provides various
products and services like:
Co-founding the Creative Thinking
Network with Dr. Cyndi Burnett,
Katie envisions building a global
community of educators supporting
creative classrooms. With her
wealth of experience, multiple
degrees, and communicable
interests, she offers personalized
professional development to
empower educators and enhance
classroom creativity.
Exploring the Roots
Curiosity 2 CREATE is a non-profit
organization that helps teachers
make learning more meaningful and
relevant to today's students. After
years of experience, Katie saw that
teachers often dreaded professional
development. It might be delivered
by non-educators less engagingly.
Therefore, Katie and her team of
teachers needed to create a
professional development for
teachers by teachers. Using a
method called CREATE, the
Curiosity 2 CREATE team of
educators coaches teachers by
revising their existing curriculum to
reflect aspects such as curiosity,
risk-taking, open-mindedness, and
deferring judgment. With these
strategies, teachers create lessons
where students are thinking in
creative and critical ways, is
relevant, failures are celebrated, and
teachers are seen as educational
guides. The goal is to make
classrooms a great place to learn.
The Spark Behind the Startup
Katie joined Curiosity 2 CREATE
because she noticed students were
not as curious and excited about
learning. As a teacher, she saw
students not thinking creatively and
critically. Katie believes asking
“What if?” and “Why?” is crucial
for learning. After years of research
and trial and error in her own

Through hands-on and engaging
activities, children work together to
solve mysteries and create inventions.
Shaping Organizational Values
Katie successfully overcame the
challenges by embodying and applying
the company’s core values. Curiosity 2

The CREATE Method
The CREATE Method represents an
innovative approach tailored for teachers to
enhance their curriculum planning. In
today’s education system, where lesson
plans can be strict, teachers often feel
limited in expressing their creativity when
designing lessons. Developed by teachers
for teachers, The CREATE Method serves
as a guiding framework for educators,
leading them through a structured process to
rebuild their existing curriculum.
This method promotes using creative and
critical thinking, working together, taking
risks, being open-minded, and other
necessary elements. Using The CREATE
Method helps teachers escape from strict
lesson plans, creating a classroom where
they can try new and exciting ways of
teaching.
Mentorship and Collaboration
Valuing education, Curiosity 2 CREATE
prioritizes former educators and
administrators in the management team. The
CREATE Method, developed by teachers
for teachers, represents this commitment.
With over 75 years of experience in
education, the management staff carefully
understands the teaching profession.
With a focus on mentorship and
collaboration, the company’s team actively
participates in shared learning experiences,
faces challenges, finds inspiration, and stays
motivated. Team members are encouraged
to explore mentorship opportunities within
the company and access resources to
connect with mentors having expertise in
their areas of interest. Regular workshops
and training sessions provide avenues for
learning from each other’s experiences and
skills.
While maintaining stability and profitability
is crucial for sustaining the nonprofit, the
company identifies that adopting calculated
risks is integral to ongoing innovation in the
company’s strategies.
Creativity is inborn, but research shows it can be
developed through practice (Doron, 2017).
Creativity is not exclusive to the arts; it influences
science, business, and everyday tasks.
Creativity does not require isolation; collaboration
sparks innovation
Creativity is not just about original ideas; refining
existing concepts is crucial.
Creativity does not thrive only in chaos; striking a
balance between freedom and structure is key.
Creativity holds practical value across industries, not
limited to specific professions or hobbies.
Funding Challenges in Nonprofit Operations
Nonprofit organizations often struggle to secure the necessary funding, but
despite this challenge, Katie remained committed to fulfilling Curiosity 2
CREATE's mission.
Common myths about creativity limit Curiosity 2 CREATE's influence. The
company struggles to convince schools to invest in training teachers to
promote creativity in classrooms despite understanding its crucial role.
Exposing these myths is important so that people understand how creativity
is essential in education.

Building on Experience and Expertise
The company’s commitment to education is evident in the
management team's work, which includes former educators
and administrators. This commitment resulted in the
creation of The CREATE Method, a teaching approach
made by teachers for teachers. The management team
brings over 75 years of educational experience to the table,
offering a detailed insight into the field of education.
Focusing on mentorship and teamwork, Curiosity 2
CREATE develops an environment where team members
can learn, challenge, inspire, and support one another.
Understanding the value of mentorship, the company
Katie has received the following awards:
Stanford Teacher of Excellence 2017,
2003 – awarded by a student who
attends Stanford
Western Illinois Teacher of Excellence
2013 and 2014 – awarded by a student

Who’s Who in Teaching 2004, 2010
actively encourages team members to seek mentorship
opportunities, facilitating connections with expert mentors
in relevant areas. Regular workshops and training sessions
promote the exchange of experiences and skills among team
members.
The company prioritizes balancing innovation with
stability. Recognizing the importance of taking calculated
risks to encourage growth and creativity, the team also
understands the necessity of maintaining stability and
profitability to ensure the nonprofit’s sustainability. While
stability is prioritized, the company recognizes that taking
calculated risks is integral to ongoing innovation in
strategies.

Mutual Defense: Similar to NATO, the Warsaw Pact was based on the principle of mutual defense, where an attack
on one member was considered an attack on all.
Soviet Dominance: The alliance reinforced Soviet political and military dominance over Eastern Europe, ensuring
alignment with Soviet policies and interests.
Activities:
•The Warsaw Pact's military forces were used to
suppress uprisings within member states, such as the
Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and the Prague Spring
of 1968.
•Unlike NATO, the Warsaw Pact had a more centralized
command structure dominated by the Soviet Union.
End of the Cold War and Aftermath:
•Dissolution of the Warsaw Pact: The pact dissolved
in July 1991, following the political changes in Eastern
Europe and the collapse of the Soviet Union.
•NATO's Evolution: NATO continues to exist and has
expanded its membership, including several former
Warsaw Pact countries, adapting to new security
challenges in the post-Cold War era.
In essence, NATO and the Warsaw Pact were central to the
military and ideological standoff of the Cold War,
representing the Western and Eastern blocs, respectively.
Their existence and rivalry shaped international relations
and defense policies during the latter half of the 20th
century.

magine standing on a porch on a bright, warm afternoon. The sky is full of pink and
blue hues. The sun shines over your head. The fresh breeze has taken over the city.
A long wooden cart patiently awaits the owner. The day is an ethereal brilliance.
I stepped into the cart with a journal in my hand. I had embarked on a new road,
exploring the places- that wanted to share their stories with me. Places that are long
lost in the world with the wheel of time.
What happened to them? What tales did they hide? Did they face a deadly war? Did
they fail the test of time? Why were they built? I have a million questions in my mind,
with an urge to nd their answers. I ordered the cart to go back in time.

Oldest Construction in the World that will Awe-Struck You:
GOBEKLI TEPE
Gobekli Tepe is an archaeological mystery located six miles
from the ancient city of Urfa in southeastern Turkey. Klaus
Schmidt, a German archaeologist from the 1990s,
discovered this site. This site predates Stonehenge by 6,000
years.
Popularly known as the Belly Hill in Turkish, Gobekli Tepe
is located in Upper Mesopotamia. The site stands as a
witness to the birth of farming communities. It portrays a
picture of rituals and social relationships of prehistoric
hunter-gatherer groups.
Gobekli Tepe is a man-made monumental architecture that
holds unique T-shaped pillars that rise to 5.50 meters. The
pillars are carved with various human and wild animals that
resemble modern-day lions, foxes, bulls, and scorpions,
witnessing proof of its rich symbolic language. The site is
carved out of limestone and offers a glimpse into the
distant past of human civilization. You may ask, what
makes this site rare?
Gobekli Tepe’s monumental structures challenge the age-
old narratives of early human societal development. This
site was built in the prehistoric period by people- devoid
of metal tools or pottery. It comprises 20 circles of
towering stone pillars each, weighing up to 20 tons. The
structures served for social gatherings and ceremonies.
Schmidt, who has experience in research for more than a
decade at the site, is convinced that the site represents the
world’s oldest groups of temples. He hints that this
temple might be the dawn of organized religious and
communal practices and the oldest construction in the
world.

Megalithic temples of Malta
The Megalithic temples of Malta stand among one of
the earliest stone buildings worldwide and date back to
the 4th and 3rd century B.C. Some historians assume
this temple to be the oldest construction in the world.
Their entrances lead the spectator to paved courts. We
see semi-circular chambers that are known as apses in
the interiors. The temples are constructed with local
limestone and show remarkable craftsmanship. They
consist of detailed decoration of drilled holes and panels
that display various patterns.
The islands of Malta and Gozo are built out of 7 ancient
megalithic temples. Each of them has a unique history
and significance. The temples in Malta like the Hagar
Qim, Mnajdra, and Tarxien show its rich temple-
building heritage to the world. It is indeed fascinating to
know how these temples were built without any
modern-day tools. This highlights the talent and skill of
the builders.
The temple is proof that society always followed ritual
practices, evidence of Malta’s rich culture and glory.
Malta is one of the most beautiful and oldest
constructions in the world.

Uruk
Uruk, popularly known as the birthplace of writing, is an ancient city in the old Mesopotamia. It holds a crucial place in
history for its countless contributions to human civilization. Uruk achieved popularity in its era for its legendary ruler
“Gilgamesh”. He was known for reaching several essential milestones in the development of human society along with a
quest for eternal life.
Uruk grew in strength in the modern-day Warqa. This old construction was discovered by King Enmerkar in 4500 BCE. The
city’s cultural legacy stands far beyond its architecture. Buried for centuries, it was rediscovered in 1853 by William Loftus.
Uruk has layers of history waiting to unfold. It is the world’s first true city, a very well-known civilization.
The Knap of Howar
The Knap of Howar is located on Papa Westray Island in
Orkney, Scotland. The name originates from the Norse
language, which means ‘Mounds of Mounds.’ The site holds
a significant place as it is one of the oldest constructions in
the world. Researchers have found proof of early human
habitation and agricultural development through
archeological excavation. The research from this site could
lead us to our rich past.
The Knap of Howar shows a glimpse into ancient history.
This Neolithic site dates back to 3700-3500 BCE. It is the
most ancient stone house in northern Europe. The site has
shown significant preservation and architectural talent. The
Knap consists of two adjacent buildings connected by a
passage. House 1 has strong stone partitions, a hearth, and a
cupboard, assuming it was a storage house.

Tumulus of Bougon
The Tumulus of Bougon is part of a serene land named Bougon, located in western France.
The Tumulus is a powerful representation of creativity, innovation, and cultural pride. It is built up of large earthly or stone
burial mounds. The impressive barrows were constructed between 4700 and 3500 B.C. and belong to the Neolithic period.
The Tumulus represents some of the earliest examples of megalithic architecture along the eastern coast of France. This site
is considered the oldest construction in the world, especially in France.
The tomb has a complex structure and is built of five tombs, each with a different architectural style. The excavation of the
site has brought up various treasures, including 220 skeletons and other articles in the grave. These graves throw light on the
ancient burial practices and rituals.
EXPLORING THE OLDEST CONSTRUCTION IN THE WORLD:
These were the first few pages of my journal that revealed the pages of human wonders to the world. More pages are waiting
to be discovered. Our lands are full of unspoken cities and unknown tales. Each of these locations is waiting to be uncovered
by us. The deep oceans, wide skies, and mystic lands- all with different stories to tell. Are you ready to hear one?
The world is full of wonders and exquisite experiences. Are you ready to write your journal?
