WHAT IS KEGEL EXERCISE?
Kegel exercises are exercises performed to strengthen the pelvic
floor muscles which support the uterurs, bladder and rectum
Introduction
➢Kegel exercises are used to strengthen and retain the pelvic floor
muscles when they have been weakened by pregnancy, childbirth,
surgery, trauma, or the ageing process.
➢Kegel weights are also known as vaginal weights. It is similar to Kegels,
where you lift and squeeze objects to strengthen your pelvic floor
muscles.
5
history
➢The kegelis named for its inventor, Dr.ArnoldKegel, a gynecologist
➢Kegel was one of the first doctors to develop and research pelvic floor exercise as a
non surgical alternative for pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence.
➢A dozen years before publishing his research, a brat named morrisdid the same.
➢Kegel developed an instrument called perineometer, using the tool he was able to
nature of pelvic floor muscles.
➢For the reason Kegel’s study took off whereas Morris’s did not.
6
definition
7
Kegel weights are objects that are inserted into the vaginal canal to
strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, the group of muscles at the
bottom of the pelvis.
DIAGNOSTIC TEST
To quantify strength
➢Perineometer
➢Manual muscle testing
➢Dynamometry
To quantify contraction
➢Ultrasound
➢MRI
➢EMG

PROCEDURE
13
Kegel exercises are a medical recommendation to all women to maintain a healthy pelvic
floor and should be carried out like so:
1. Start at your anus or vagina and squeeze your muscles as tight as you can, as if you are holding
in wind.
2. Holding this squeeze and keeping your muscles tight, squeeze your vaginal muscles
and lift them up towards your navel.
3. Once you have held this squeeze and lift, relax you muscles completely.
Vaginal cones
14
Vaginal cones
15
➢Insert the cone into your vagina or into your anus
➢Squeeze and lift the cone using your vaginal muscles as described same as kegels
➢and hold steady for 10 seconds.
➢Now release and relax your muscles for 5 seconds
Vaginal balls

types
18
➢SLOW KEGEL-this is designed to target slow twitch muscle fibers(responsible for prolonged bladder
control)
➢FAST KEGEL-this is designed to target fast twitch muscle fibers(responsible for support while sudden
burst of pressure like sneezing, jumping)
Exercise progression
19
➢The above mentioned exercise using weights
can be progressed by using different
positions or activities as shown in pictures
PRECAUTIONS
DO’S
•Set yourself challenges(progress from lying to standing, walking,
running Etc.,)
•Practice good hygiene with your kegelweights
DONT’S
•Insert weights too far or too shallow into the vagina
•Worry about kegelweights getting lost inside your vagina
•Be too hard on yourself in the beginning
•Stop breathing while doing exercise

Vaginal weight cone versus assisted pelvic floor muscle training in the treatment of female
urinary incontinence. A prospective, single-blind, randomized trial
•Evidence suggest that the reduction of urinary leakage after four months of exercise in the training group
with vaginal balls was significantly better (P<0.03) than the results in the group training with pelvic floor
muscle exercises alone.
•Vaginal weight cone (VWC) versus assisted pelvic floor muscle training (APFMT) in the treatment of urinary incontinence (UI) in women. One hundred three
incontinent women were randomly distributed into two groups: group G1 (n = 51) treated with VWC and G2 (n = 52), APFMT. The following parameters were
performed initially and after treatment: (1) clinical questionnaire, (2) visual analogue scale (VAS), (3) 60-min pad test, and (4) subjective and objective
assessment of pelvic floor muscle (PFM). There was a significant decrease in nocturia and urine loss after treatment in both groups (p < 0.05). In VAS, there
was a significant improvement of all parameters in both groups (p < 0.05). The pad test showed significant decrease in both groups (p < 0.05). There was a
significant increase of PFM strength in both groups (p < 0.05). There was no difference between groups treated with VWC and APFMT.
