KEYBOARD
Keyboard is similar to a typewriter. The keyboard has the following keys and functions.
1. Typewriter Keys:
Typewriter keys are used to type letters, numbers and punctuation symbols.
2. Function Keys:
Function keys are labeled from F1 to F12. They are located at the top of the keyboard.
They are used for different software functions.
3. Cursor Control Keys:
There are 8 cursor control keys. Of these four are arrow keys marked with . They are
named as left arrow key, right arrow key, down arrow key and up arrow key. They arrow keys
are used to move the cursor left, right, down or up in the screen, one line or one character at a
time.
The other four cursor control keys are pageUp, page Down, Home and End keys.
Pg Up key (Page Up):
It is used to move to the previous page.
PgDn Key (Page down):
It is used to move to the next page.
Home Key:
It moves the cursor to the top of the document or to the beginning of the line.
End Key:
End Key moves the cursor to the end line of the document.
4. Numeric key Pad:
Numeric key pad contains calculator like key. It is located on the right hand side.
Some of the numeric keys have double function. These two functions are controlled by
another key called NUM LOCK. When NUM LOCK keys in on, the keys function as numeric
keys. When NUM LOCK key is off. The keys function as cursor control keys.
5. Caps Lock Key:
Caps lock key helps to type capital or lower letters. When the typewriter keys are
pressed, lower case letters are typed.
But after pressing caps lock key, the typewriter keys type upper case letters (CAPS)
To get lower letters the caps lock key is pressed again.
6. Shift Keys:
When the shift key is pressed, pressing a letter key makes the appearance of upper case
on the screen. If the caps lock key is on, then the upper case letters appear.
When there are two symbols on a key, pressing the shift key causes the upper symbol to
appear.
7. Ctrl and Alt Keys:
Ctrl is the control keys. Alt is the alternate key. These two are used simultaneously to
change a command.
When ctrl, Alt and Del keys are simultaneously used, the computer automatically restarts.
8. Enter / Return Key:
The enter key is also called return key. It has two functions. It can alert the computer
that giving instruction is finished so that the computer can process or execute the instruction.
Pressing the enter key begins a new paragraph or a new line.
9. Tabkey:
Pressing the tab key moves the cursor along a line to a present point. It helps to indent
paragraphs and line up columns, text or numbers.
It also helps to move from one option to another.
10. ESC Key:
ESC is the escape key. It is used to cancel an entry or command.
11. Delete Key:
It erases a space or a character which is placed at the right side of the cursor.
12. Backspace key:
It erases a space or a character which is placed to the left side of the blinking cursor.
13. Print Screen key:
When this key is pressed along with shift key, the display on the screen gets printed.
