Kingdom protista Chapter 7

Major groups of protista Protozoa: animal like protest Algae : plant like protest Fungus like protest : slime molds and water molds

Protozoa : animal like protist Animal - like Protists .  Animal - like protists  are called protozoa. Protozoa are single-celled eukaryotes that share some traits with animals.   Like animals , they can move, and they are heterotrophs Amoeba Zooflagellates Cilliats Foraminiferans and actinipods apicomplexans

Amoeba Pelomyxa palustris also called as The giant amoeba (takes energy from methanogenic bacteria) Entamoeba histolytica ( it causes dysentery in humans )

Zooflagellates T richonymphas T rypanosoma Choanoflagellates

Cilliates 1: Paramecium ( motile ciliate ) 2: Stentor (sessile ciliate )

Foraminiferans Actinopods Examples Forams ( foraminiferans ) Radiolarians ( actinopod )

Apicomlexans Example Plasmodium ( it causes malaria) Stages Sporozoites Merozoites Ring stage Gametocytes Egg and sperm Zygote

Algae ( plant like protist) Euglenoids Dinoflagellates Diatoms Brown algae Red algae Green algae

Euglenoids It behaves both autotrophically as well as hetrotrophically

Dinoflagellates 2 nd major group of protist Involves in the formation of red tides

Diatoms Major producers in aquatic (marine and fresh water) life. Play important role in marine food chains They have beautiful patterns and contains two shells

Brown algae kelps ( largest brown algae) Example: laminaria

Red algae Helps in formation of coral reefs along with coral animals Example : P olysiphonia

Green algae Chlamydomonas ( unicellular) Dermids ( two cells with two halves) Volvox ( colonial ) Spirogyra ( filamentous ) Ulva ( sheet like ) Chlorella

Chlamydomonas

Dermids

Spirogyra

Volvox

Ulva It has sheet like body and also called as sea lettuce

Chlorella It has all the essential nutrients that human body needs and also very important for research use
