CONSTRUCTION STARTED IN 1192 CE FINISHED IN 1220 CE The Qutub Minar is a minaret and victory tower comprising the Qutub complex, which lies at the site of Delhi's oldest fortified city, Lal Kot, founded by the Tomar Rajputs .
Construction was initiated by Qutb- ud -din Aibak , the founder of the Delhi Sultanate. But after his death in 1210 CE his successor Shams- ud -din Iltutmish completed the tower around 1220 CE. The fifth and final story was constructed by Firoz Shah Tughlaq in 1369 after damage by lightning.
Why was it built? To celebrate Muslim dominance after the defeat of Delhi’s last Hindu kingdom. Served as a victory tower and also functioned as a minaret (from which the muezzin called the faithful to prayer at the adjacent Quwwat -ul-Islam Mosque).
