FACTS ABOUT EYES Presented by Anil pdt B. Optom , NAMS II year

(we have had our peepers since we were born, so we may think we know them pretty well, but here are some fun facts we may not know about eyes.) The average blink lasts for about 1/10 th of a second. While it takes some time for most parts of our body to warm up to their full potential, our eyes are on their “A game”24/7. Eyes heal quickly with proper care, it only takes about 48 hours for the eye to repair a corneal scratch. Seeing is such a big part of everyday life that it requires about half of the brain to get involved.

Newborns don’t produce tears. They make crying sounds , but the tears don’t start flowing until they are about 4-13 weeks old. Around the world, about 39 million people are blind and roughly 6 times that many have some kind of vision impairment. Doctors have yet to find a way to transplant an eyeball. The optic nerve that connects the eye to the brain is too sensitive to reconstruct successfully. The cells in our eye come in different shapes. Rod-shaped cells allow we to see shapes and cone-shaped cells allow we to see color. We blink about 12 times every minute.

Our eyes are about 1 inch across and weight about 0.25 ounce . Some people are born with two differently colored eyes. This condition is Heterochroma . Each of our eyes has a small blind spot in the back of the retina where the optic nerve attaches. We don’t notice the hole in our vision because our eyes work together to fill in each other’s blind spot. Out of all the muscles in our body, the muscle that control eyes are the most active. 80% of vision problems worldwide are avoidable or even curable.

Iris Scans are more secure than Fingerprints. In a single second. Its possible to blink five times . The eye is the fastest muscle in our body- hence why when something happens quickly, we say in the blink of an eye’ A blink typically lasts 100-150 milliseconds . We Blink between 20 ,000 and 30,000 times every day. The human eye can function at 100% at any given moment , without needing to rest. If the human eye was a digital camera, it would have 576 megapixels . The human eye can detect 10 million different colours .

The eyes perceive things upside down . We actually see with our brain , not our eyes. Our eyes function like a camera capturing light and sending data back to the brain. The world’s most common eye colour is brown . Although our nose and ears keep growing throughout our lives , our eyes remain the same size from birth. All babies are colour blind at birth. Eyelashes have an average lifespan of five months . If we lined up all the eyelashes shed during one human life , they would measures 98 feet long .

The space between our eyebrows is called the Glabella . Its impossible to sneeze with our eyes open. People generally read 25% slower on screen than on paper. Dogs can’t distinguish between red and green. An ostriches eye is bigger than its brain. A shark’s cornea is used in human eye surgery , as it is the most similar to the human cornea . Scorpions can have as many as 12 eyes and the box jelly fish has 24. Camel’s eyelashes can measure up to 10cm long to protect its eyelashes form blowing sand the debris in the desert.

As well as super long eyelashes, camels also have three eyelids to protect their form sand. Bees have 5 eyes. The cornea is the only tissue in the human body that doesn’t contain blood vessels . Dolphins sleep with one eye open. Snakes have two sets of eyes- one set used to see and the other to detect heat and movement. A dragonfly has 30,000 lenses in its eyes , assisting them with motion detection and making them very difficult for predators to kill. Some people have a fear of eyes: its called ommatophobia .

Eyes are the second most complex organ after brain. Our eyes are made up of over 2 million working parts. While a fingerprints has 40 unique characteristics , an iris has 256 . This is why retina scans are increasingly being used for security purposes. When working at a computer , we should follow the 20-20-20 rule – look at something twenty feet away from our computer every twenty minutes for twenty seconds. Although the function of tears is to keep eyes clean , scientist don’ t understand why we cry when we are upset.
