What is a context? Context is the setting of a word. You could probably guess what’s missing from the picture through its CONTEXT.

Con- means with Text- means written words Which means CONTEXT CLUES help readers look for CLUES within the WRITTEN WORDS. Around the UNFAMILIAR WORDS are the clues(words) that can help you understand their meaning.

Why are they important? They help you understand what you're reading without stopping to use a dictionary. This helps you improve your vocabulary naturally and keep your reading flow (No need to get dictionary or go to google to find the meaning of the word).

Types of Context Clues The five main types of context clues are: Pictures: An image that gives you a direct hint. Definitions: The author provides a definition right in the sentence. Examples: A list of items that show you what the unknown word is. Synonyms: A word with a similar meaning is used nearby. Antonyms: A word with the opposite meaning is used nearby.

Finding Meaning with Pictures Example: "There are many craters on the moon.“ Look at the picture of the moon. What does "craters" mean?

Definitions as Clues Example: "New York City has many skyscrapers , or tall buildings.“ The phrase "tall buildings" defines the word "skyscrapers."

Antonyms as Clues Example: "We want to move out of our small house and into a more spacious house.“ The word "spacious" is an antonym (opposite) of "small," which helps define "spacious."
