Kunajali Marakkar biography

The title Kunjali Marakkar was given to the Admirals of the fleet of the Samoothiri (Zamorin). Marakkar was in charge of defending the land against foreign invaders.

From 1520 to 1600, four Kunjali Marakkars fought the Portuguese invasion with their brilliant war strategies and leadership skills. They were unmatched at naval guerrilla warfare.

The earliest naval defense of the Indian coast was in fact carried out by the Kunjali Marakkars. The movie "Marakkar- The lion of the Arabian Sea" directed by Priyadarshan is an extravagant cinematic representation of the glorious history of these legendary figures.
