Understanding the Indian Knowledge System (IKS): Meaning, Scope, and Relevance

Introduction to Indian Knowledge system Ancient knowledge is the accrued knowledge over several generations and preserved in formal and informal means. Formal means include documented knowledge and informal means include shared values and practices through oral tradition. While several scholars are engaged in the process of bringing the hidden knowledge out of these manuscripts by researching and republishing such works, it does not match the scale required to make a meaningful impact.

Welcome to Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) is an innovative cell under Ministry of Education ( MoE ) at AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) , New Delhi. It is established to promote interdisciplinary research on all aspects of IKS, preserve and disseminate IKS for further research and societal applications . It will actively engage for spreading the rich heritage of our country and traditional knowledge in the field of Arts and literature, Agriculture, Basic Sciences, Engineering & Technology, Architecture, Management, Economics, etc . 

Vision of the Indian Knowledge Systems Division (IKS Division), Ministry of Education The vision of the IKS Division is to  rejuvenate and mainstream Indian Knowledge Systems for the contemporary world. The objective of the IKS Division is to completely decolonize Indian mind by generating interest and healthy  critical reverence for the unbroken knowledge traditions of Bharata for the welfare of the world.

Mission Create a database of individuals and organizations who have contributed by way of Research, Teaching, Publication and Preservation of ancient and contemporary rich Indian knowledge systems ranging from art, music, dance, drama, to mathematics, astronomy, science, technology, life sciences, environment and natural sciences, health care, yoga, law, jurisprudence, economics, social sciences, psychology, philosophy, management, linguistics, oral traditions of India, knowledge hidden in Sanskrit, Prakrit ,, Tamil, Pali , etc.

Meaning of the Three Words in IKS Indian Refers to the origin and context of the knowledge. Rooted in the geography, culture, philosophy, and traditions of India . Represents wisdom that evolved in Indian civilization, but has universal relevance . Knowledge Refers to awareness, understanding, and insight gained through experience, study, and practice. Includes both scientific and spiritual wisdom . Goes beyond information – it integrates theory with application and values . System Refers to a structured and organized framework of knowledge. Suggests an interconnected and holistic approach , where different disciplines (science, philosophy, arts, medicine, etc.) are linked together. Not random bits of information, but a comprehensive, sustainable, and integrated worldview .
