Architects design buildings. They can use 3D modelling software to create their designs. Why do you think 3D modelling is useful in architecture? In this lesson you will plan your own building design, which you will make in TinkerCAD . Design using 3D modelling 3 Introduction

Architects are specialised designers who work with the built environment. They combine strong artistic and imaginative skills with technical and engineering knowledge. They have to consider how new buildings will fit with the older ones around them. 3D design and visualisation helps them to explore how a building will look and feel before it is built. Using 3D design software helps architects to see how their ideas fit into the real world: They can use virtual reality to walk round a model of the building and make changes. They can combine existing components and new ideas. It can show how the light in a building will change through the day, or from one season to another. Designing like an architect 14 Activity 3 Architects rarely get to just design what they want. They work with clients who provide a specification or list of requirements for a building or structure. The architect will then draw plans and make models to communicate their ideas to the customer. They may even make many changes before it is ever built! Designing like this allows accurate calculations to be made about how much a building will cost to build, and computer simulation can even show how it will be affected by the weather.

They must meet the needs of their client for accessibility, amount of light and aesthetic appeal. Think about the scale of your components. Do they make sense for the height of a person?
