Definition It is an inflammation of the inner ear.

ETIOLOGY Disorders of fascial & acoustic nerves Bacterial or viral in origin Trauma to the inner ear Because of prolonged antibiotic therapy

Risk factor Smoking Chronic alcohol Allergies Habitually fatigued Stress

TYPES BACTERIAL Usually occurs as a complication of otitis media. Causes The infection can enter the inner ear by penetrating the membranes of the oval or round windows.

VIRAL It affects the hearing & balance. CAUSES The most commonly identified viral causes are mumps, rubella, rubeola & influenza, URI.

SIGN & SYMPTOMS Sudden onset of incapacitating vertigo usually with nausea & vomiting. Various degree of hearing loss . Dizziness Difficulty focusing eyes Tinnitus.

TREATMENT Intra-venous antibiotic therapy. Fluid replacement. Administration of vestibular suppressant such as meclisine & antiemetic medications.

Nursing management Assessment- History related to ear infection, hearing loss Physical examination of ear Nursing diagnosis Hyperthermia related to infection Imbalance nutritional status less than body requirement related to vomiting Anxiety related to disease prognosis and hospitalization
